We were owed 10 full seasons of this show with wonderful dialogue and plot like this.

"Power resides where men believe it resides..." ~ Lord Varys

One of the best dialogues in the show, because it was almost word for word from the book. That George R R Martin writes pretty well...

The dialogue is so good in the early seasons. It’s a shame it didn’t stay that way.

Love these vintage clips. Varys always had ‘wisdom’ to impart. Great supporting character

My favorite thing about this conversation is that Tyrion immediately knows the answer, but Varys manages to convince him he should doubt his answer. Even while agreeing with Tyrions answer.

there’s some universe out there where GoT had a full 13 season run and is now the most beloved show all time

I genuinely believed that Varys was the smartest of all and would've survived till the end.

Fun Fact: This parable is basically 1:1 from George Orwell's story about the elephant. Not Joffrey executed Stark, but the crowd forcing his hand. If he were lenient, the people would have dethroned him then and there. He would have lost his authority. Orwell didn't want to shoot the elephant, the crowd demanded this demonstration of power.

Moments like this are what made the show great. Condensing the last two seasons like they did meant we got fewer of these moments, which led to the mediocre garbage we were served.

Varys was my favorite character, followed by Tyrion. The way they did Varys at the end was a disgrace. No way he goes out like that, caught unawares. He was maybe the smartest, sharpest person on the entire show.

Tyrion really matured from the start of the show, It might not seem like it but he was the best Lannister afterall

This reminds me of what Mysaria said: there is no power but what the people allow you to take

This. It was this single clip posted years back that got me intrigued with the show. I watched all of Season one, then read the books, then started being a megafan. It is still amazing.

Whenever I see clips like this from when GOT was good, I get sad & mad at the later seasons. THE SHOW WAS SO GOOD!

God this dialogue is wonderful. Not only is the riddle used to list off all of the recent moves tyrion has made with the small council in case viewers forget or need reminding, but also on its surface is varys giving advice to tyrion and furthering their psuedo friendship.

The best and real purpose behind the scene tho is obviously how it contextualizes and characterizes several people. It explains and describes everyones thoughts to the viewer (reader, george wrote most of this) who gives an answer to the riddle. as shown by tyrions answer being swordsman having recently travelled with bronn certainly wouldve died without him, or cersei’s answer later about power being power trying to brute force her way into being like her brother and father, or varys growing up with mummers establishing that he is like the great and powerful oz, an image who uses peoples thoughts and fears against them where really hes just an illusion, the “spider” is a character.

This was the scene that best encapsulated the themes of the entire series.

It was never about swords or magics or dragons, but about power.

And the writers forgot that after Season 4.

Varys was the most underrated dark horse in the Game of Thrones.
