450k miles on a 03 outback. No issues people just don’t maintain their cars

In my 45 years of driving, the best car I've ever had (no major issues ever) is the Subaru Outback. Love it!

I have an 03 legacy with 270k miles and owned for 10+ years. Never opened the engine to do headgaskets. The trick with older Subarus is coolant flushes and oil changes. Newer ones past 2012 do not have headgasket issues. Mostly they have oil consumption issues past that until 2018. 2020 and up seem solid with the new FAs.

My wife’s 1998 Subaru Impreza was driving then parked for four years in all weather conditions. New battery and new gas it started right up first try. I was very surprised!

VW air cooled didn't have head gaskets. Number 3 cylinder would overheat because the oil cooler was in the way of air flow. In 71 they fixed the problem by bumping out the oil cooler

Showing a 4-cylinder head gasket, while Subaru only made flat 4 and 6 cylinder engines that would require 2 or 3 cylinder head gaskets.

Owned 3 VWs back in the day. Never had a gasket blow or any major engine problem. Always added an oil cooler set that included a filter and increased oil capacity to 5 qts. That oil is very important to engine cooling.

Subaru didn't upgrade the head gaskets until they went to the engines with timing chains instead of belts. This was around 2010-2013 depending on model. I have a 2009 and a 2010... and have changed the composite head gaskets on both. The turbo models DID come with the good MLS head gaskets. FelPro makes a good kit with the MLS gaskets.

Our 2010 Subaru Impreza blew a head gasket at around 70, 000 miles. Common issue for that year of Subie…

PCV valve failure will blow a Subaru head gasket because of excessive blow by.
It's a cheap and easy to replace part.
Do it evey 100k... Cheap insurance.

Subaru's are always full of clean oil. Adding oil due to burning, the oil is refreshed every 3- 4, 000 miles

Subaru boxer engines are often also abused and not tuned properly when modded.

Have a 2010 Impreza no issues at 95k miles so far, I do change the oil every 3k and trans and coolant every 50k miles. Timing belts next at 100k miles.

The head gasket issues mainly pertain to the ej25, ej251 and ej253 engines. Which are very common engines on Subarus from the late 90s into the 2010s. Turbocharged and 6 cylinder engines typically didn’t have this issue. It wasn’t until the introduction of the fb25 engine (2013 in case of the Outback, I’m not sure about the other models) that the head gasket issues became much less common.

Damn good advice for suby owners scotty.
Love ur videos.
Ive seen plenty of neglected modern 2.5's with over 200k, pretty spent by then but none the less, made it.
N plenty of well maintained 160k plus miles that are still as quiet as the day they were made.
Some of the best idling engines ever. They are literally like sewing machines when running n generally smoother than that.
Wish they didn't use cvt's but subaru has made pretty good transmissions that do hold up.
They get a little shake to em when putting em in n out if gear d to r stuff like that but generally hold up well.

I'm a wannabe Subaru fan. I've owned three but had one kind of problem or another. My last one was a lifted Impreza hatchback/wagon with a manual. Possibly the best car in the snow that I've owned. But my 04 330xi was so much better in so many ways that it made the Subie feel like tin. I had a friend that was the service tech manager and they were still having head gasket problems back in 2016. I had fewer problems with my early 2000's Beemers. Three Subarus, six Beemers (not counting five Z3's). Or listen to Scotty and drive a Toyota.
