In todays episode we are trying our hand at carpentry! We are going to try and build a self standing unit that will act as stairs for the second level, a bar and cook top with a sink, and a bathroom. Come along as we work with wood and glue instead of metal and welders!

I would mount a small camper window with frosted glass on the outside of the toilet on the starboard side! It’s good for lighting and ventilation on a hot summer day!

Architect here. You could get a little extra depth on the treads and make them more comfortable to walk on by adding a one inch nosing to the front edge. That way the rise is maintained but the tread is a little deeper and safer

Move think sink to the right side of your bar, then put a sink inside the bathroom. They would share a wall making plumbing easy

couple things. Marine grade plywood is not typically treated to resist mold or mildew. It is created using water proof glue with less voids than traditional wood. So, in this case you didn't need marine grade plywood. Since you are sealing it with resin. Not a big deal. Just way more expensive. One recommendation. Vents. Make sure you add vents. Otherwise it'll trap moisture. Moisture will find a de-lamination or weak spot in the resin.

It's looking good. Only thing with the bar I would change is put the sink in the right hand corner. Closer to where pipes will already be. And it won't block or interfere with access to the storage space under the stairs and bar top.

pro tip- do not glue the countertop down. Glue in corner blocks inside the cabinet then use stainless screws to fasten from underneath into the countertop. Gluing the countertop down will work fine until you have to remove the countertop later for unseen maintenance

hey man that piece looks great! Quick tip though: On any open air area of the boat you are going to want any/all doors hinged towards the front. If you have them hinged towards the rear they will fly open if anybody opens it while in motion.

Hi mate, mega interested watching this build come along, two little bits of advice from a joiner (carpenter) to you. I know you for the sides of the steps. In scotland we call it a stringer i would highly sugest using a thinker bit of wood for strength. Wouldnt use plywood in a house never minr on a boat buddy. It will 100% twist on you. Also cut some 100mm triangle blocks and glue/pin 3 on underside of stair where stringer meets riser. This will stop the stairs from creaking when walking on them.

Another idea i had, as i know every inch on a boat is precious... grab yourself some drawers hinges build a few boxes and turn your first 2 stairs into drawers for storage as that space wont be getting used.

Hope you see this bud

After you apply gelcoat to the steps put sand on it so there is some grip. That's what we used to do when making wind turbine covers.

You can reduce weight, reduce wind drag, increase air flow, and increase natural light all at once. Use your router and cut 1/8th-1/4 (depending on preference) slots or grooves all along the side of that plywood. This way you can still have privacy, but also get rid of some material. Also, if someone craps, there will be somewhere for the smell to go. You can also make some cool looking patterns that make it seem more expensive than the labor involved, especially since you are glassing over it all.

I’d definitely add a window in the bathroom for ventilation.

Thats so sick! I'd put the sink on the right part since the water would be hooked right next to it in the bathroom!

Hey mate, that's looking brilliant!. The butchers block counter top would normally be attached by screwing from underneath. That way you can remove it. probably worth creating some supports on the cupboard to screw into.

As a suggestion add a window for ventilation and natural light on the bathroom. Also for better access to the place under the stairs, cut them aprox 30% to 40% from the total height and add some hinges . For reference see how its made in sailboat engine access under companion way stairs . it's pretty common and very helpful.

Install an automated retractable floor for the hot tub. In that way you can utilise the area as a deck when not in use.

Hey Chris, a stringer is a framing piece that runs along the boat not across it. Those cross beams should be referred to as beams.
So excited for this build fellas

As a cabinet maker I recommend using the Kreg Pocket hole system to connect your panels together

Hi guys I’m a finish carpenter and have done lots of boats at a boat yard also (I like working on boats!!) nice work looks great it’s not as easy as it looks to make something like this and make it look good . I think the structure will be plenty strong when it’s fiber glassed the only thing I’d do different is mount the doors internally and set a frame inside as the glassing will build out the walls and you’ll find it had to mount the doors to the face side. Also water will run down and go inside between the two faces. If you mount internally it will be less hasssle for ye. Well done really enjoying the build have fun

If it was me, I would put the sink on other side of countertop opposite where you originally planned. This give you more accessibility to the storage space from doorway and to the space behind the toilet. Keeping all plumbings and pipes in that small enclosed space behind the dressing area wall rather than having it in front of the doorway under the countertop.

Awesome video build!

Gonna put a window in the head? Would be a good idea. Nothing wrong with natural light! This is a cool project! I wish I could be in Portland to see this launch!
