If you want to build muscle at your full potential and get the best muscle growth response from your bodybuilding workouts, pre-workout cardio is something you should avoid. A brief warm up is fine, but avoid intense cardio as it will simply pre-fatigue you and reduce workout performance. Save cardio for after your training session, or just perform it on a different day. If achieving maximum hypertrophy is not your goal then it's really up to you, but if you want to gain muscle optimally then cardio before a workout is not ideal.

Walking to the gym for 15 mins is essentially my cardio. I never arrive cold.

You’re damn right, I used to run and then work out, now I’ve swapped it around and both my workout and my run has improved tremendously

ADDITIONAL NOTES:

Keep in mind that this advice assumes you're training with the goal of maximizing muscle growth/strength gain.

In that case, pre-workout cardio (aside from maybe a light 5-10 minute warm up) is definitely something you want to avoid as it will simply pre-fatigue you (both physically and mentally) and lower your overall weight training performance.

However, if you're training more for general fitness/conditioning and you do want to build muscle but not necessarily to 100% of your potential, then when you do cardio is completely up to you and can just be based on preference.

The type of cardio and weight training session you're performing of course plays a role as well.

If you're doing all out sprint intervals and then immediately training legs after, that's going to have a much bigger interference effect than a 30 minute brisk walk followed by an arm day (which shouldn't be an issue at all unless your conditioning is absolutely terrible).

Ok so basically for the first time after 5 or 6 years that I have been at the gym in, first day the couch wrote me down a list of exercises and had me do 80 minutes cardio before moving into weights. Basically passed out that day and I finally found a reputable source of information in this here video. Thanks brother, I was never sure about cardio before hitting the weights but now I know.

I reccomend doing cardio early in the morning before school/work. It will get you into a good mood for the day. Then do your muslce building workout after school/work

Cardio and running will always be the best for me. Feels so good hiking or walking up a lot of stairs and not feeling tired at all. Or being able to run for miles quickly without being tired

I always do 10 minutes on the treadmill at a decent walking pace and I’m always more warmed up for my workout. I also drink my pre work out during this time

So true i really loved rowing a few kms an bike for 30 mins an allways fatigue with weights the day i had no time to do my cardio an just went to weights i smashed my pb and reps an sets all part off learning 💪 love youre contebt bratha all the way fron new zealand 💪

"Well there is that one study that shows..." ... that the important PGC-1a4 gene is expressed much higher when cardio is combined with resistance training. There's always a studycel in the comments so figured I'd be him today. Best to do cardio after weight training I guess.

This is so true, people need to realize what overall energy expenditure is. Just because cardio doesn't directly tax your biceps doesn't mean it won't take away from your total energy.
