Your kids are no longer engaging in problem behavior & there's no going back

The number one question I get asked when it comes to children engaging in challenging behavior is:

“What should I do when my child _______ (hits, kicks, bites, scratches, etc).” 

And let me fill out in on a little secret every parent should know ⤵️

Understanding WHY your child engages in inappropriate behavior is CRUCIAL for creating lasting behavior change. Here’s why: 

Let’s say your child hits you today because you asked them to get ready for bed. Now, let’s say your child hits you tomorrow because they want your attention. 

If you treated all hitting behavior the same and determined that your response would be to ignore it, you would actually be making one of the behaviors worse! 

You ask your child to go to bed ➡️ they hit you ➡️ you ignore it. Your child’s hitting just worked! They no longer have to go to bed because you are ignoring them! 

By understanding the function of your child’s challenging behavior (AKA why it is happening), you can ensure that your response does not make the problem behavior worse.

And remember, any time a behavior continues to happen over and over again, it means it’s being met with something it likes (reinforcement).
