Episode 5 - Lateral Hip Pain: Stretches

Показать описание
It is extremely common for patients with lateral hip pain caused by either a hip bursitis or gluteal tendinopathy (also known as Greater Trochanteric Pain Syndrome GTPS) to be told to stretch their glutes. Unfortunately, this often just ends up making it worse. In this video, Alison explains why stretching can be so provocative and is really not a good idea for anyone with greater trochanteric pain syndrome.

I’m in the US. I have been dealing with what I know now was greater trochanteric /bilateral hip pain misdiagnosed as piriformis syndrome (for years!). After finally getting an MRI, my doctor knows I it’s greater trochanteric pain, possible SI joint dysfunction, and a partial tear in the tendon that attaches from my hamstring to my ischial tuberosity (sit bone). All those stretches you just showed at the end were stretches I was told to do, repeatedly, for years, in Physical Therapy, (that’s what we call Physio in the states). Here I am, post menopausal, and in the worst pain of my life, and the very things that were supposed to help me, I believe have made it worse. As I mentioned, the MRI showed my hip has horrible tendinitis all over. Basically, it’s a mess, but my bones are great and lower lumbar spine is in great condition for my age, 54. My sciatic nerve and my piriformis muscle look perfect. It’s was always lateral hip pain. I’m just starting physical therapy again, now that they know what’s going on. I feel that it was providential that I landed on your YouTube channel. I don’t want to hurt myself more. Thank you so much for this series. It might, quite literally, save my ass.😁

My PT has had me doing these same stretches for 3 months and my hip/pain has gotten worse.
Thank you!

That was the most thorough series about outer hip pain I’ve seen in YouTube! Thank you for that! Would have been nicer if you had suggested some rehab exercises too :)

I've just found your videos, you and the videos are amazing. I've suffered for years, with no improvement, am now following your advice. The pillow between knees at night has really helped my sleep. I will keep going with your advice. Thank you so much.

This whole series is AMAZING! what yoga poses should we avoid - that might be compressing things further?

I was suffering from lateral hip pain n slight pain in groin area. After physiotherapy (IFT treatment), it was good, but it became worse again after stretching exercises.
Please suggest some exercises or how to get rid of it🙏

Could stretching other muscles help it? For instance, adductors - would that possibly reduce the comfort and tendency of the affected hip falling into that bad position? So it won’t “prefer” adduction while sitting, standing, etc

I’ve been tolerating this pain for almost two years. It’s horrendous. I’ve intuitively worked out the trick with the pillow, which is great. But I’d like to know what other exercises I could do to strengthen my legs, because they have lost lots of strength since I’ve hit perimenopause

This is so hard to self diagnose and some calls for stretching and some doesn't. I have stabbing and extreme pain in outer hip area. It does go down my leg at all and isn't in my back. Nothing I've tried has worked.

Could lateral hip pain come from the vastus lateralis? My hip pain is elicited most prominently when doing the leg extension machine and was wondering if that could be the cause
