Is the ‘Great Resignation’ a real thing? | The Bottom Line

Economists call it "The Great Resignation".

It started last April when the number of Americans who quit their jobs broke all records. This is not about a few people resigning here and there. Instead, every month, millions of Americans wake up one day and quit.

The seismic shift in the labour market is wreaking havoc everywhere from restaurants to hospitals, with millions of jobs unfilled.

What do employers need to know if they want to attract and keep workers? Have employee-labour relations changed forever? Host Steve Clemons speaks with Upwork chief economist Adam Ozimek and University of California law professor Veena Dubal.

Americans ARE DONE with awful jobs with little pay. If you don't want to pay a livable wage and treat employees like actual people middle class businesses will be destroyed

Yes. Why would employers force good employees to commute, some for hours a day, to a office? Why spend rent on huge offices when now half the space will do? The pandemic is a milestone event and the clash with the technology has changed our work culture. The importance of central business districts is gone.

Narcissistic abusive managers and CEO’s are the problem. Here’s a thought how about start listening to employees if you don’t want your company to have a high turnover rate losing money

They showed no loyalty to us and furloughed/fired us when we needed them most. So now we will show then what the meaning of no loyalty TRULY looks like.

There’s a spiritual component to the great resignation that I don’t hear anyone talking about! People don’t want to exploit other people anymore!!

Why not mention the millions of Americans who have left the work force? 4 million early retirements and at least 3 to 4 million folks who left the work force due to Long Covid as a permanent disability. This labor shortage isn’t temporary.

Separation, it's genius that way people will never commune, never grow, never evolve. We need all to stand against this

Why doesn't anyone mention this: I remember when automation of labor was supposed to give the people a better life. Less hardship and more free time to learn, enjoy and evolve.

Instead all the benefits of efficiency went up the foodchain.
When less manual work was needed to the factory jobs, they didn't allow people to work shorter days for the same money they need to get by... They fired a bunch and overworked the rest.
Instead of raising the life standard, it went to people who ran out of useful ideas for wealth and started burning it in the atmosphere (along with extra gov funding... factually: tax paid by the people to gov so the gov takes care of the citizens needs)

It's very real and probably permanent.

I think a lot of the outsourcing needs to stop. All this does is cause workers to compete with each other for jobs and how can you compete with someone who pays a couple hundred dollars for rent when you have to pay more than $1000? The low wage wins out every time and then a good job here turns into an exploitative low-wage job with expectations on the part of the employer, who is laughing all the way to the bank, becoming outrageously outsized for the amount of money being grudgingly paid, and with the all too prevalent attitude of "You are disposable." No wonder people are quitting.

I can understand micro business in the black community particularly for black women, for the past 6 years even with multiple degrees in tones of experience I struggle to make a livable wage. Folks are tired of this reality and want something better.

We need unions! If salaries are to ever match living wages, we need collectively bargaining. Look at all those who currently work with in a union, they're not rich but they can live better then paycheck to paycheck.

Honestly, Corporate Mission Statements that don't consider worker happiness are not sustainable. This isn't what founders In Philadelphia envisioned. Ben Franklin and William Penn understood this even taking care of the street gardens for workers walking to and from factories. The bully centric CEO/Shareholder/Employee reward ratios reflect ignorance that's not sustainable. Bully centric consequences like The Great Depression show just one of frequent collapses of entire nations throughout world history caused by income inequality.
I think Veena sees this more clearly. Listen to her.

Uber is not "great technology" but a reimplementation of telephone with fancy UI and nothing more. Great technology would it be if it would be a protocol, working p2p without centralized server and company.
