It's hilarious how many angry comments I get any time I make a clip explaining why the standing plate press is a garbage exercise for the pecs.

Some people just cannot wrap their head around the fact that "feeling" a muscle does not necessarily mean it's being effectively stimulated for hypertrophy.

Go ahead and put your arms straight out in front of you and press your hands together as hard as possible using no weight at all.

You'll feel the same sensation in your chest, because you're literally just flexing it.

The primary action in a standing plate press is the front delts resisting shoulder extension as gravity pulls the plates straight down to the floor.

The chest is working isometrically to a certain degree to keep the plates in your hands, but the direction of the resistance is still not even moving in opposition to the chest fibers.

If you wanted to properly work the chest isometrically in a shortened position like this, you'd need to do it with cables or a machine (such as a pec deck or converging chest press) where you're fighting to keep your hands together as the weight pulls your arms out to the sides. (I don't recommend bothering with this, but if you really wanted to then that's how you'd do it)

A standing plate press is not a chest hypertrophy exercise... it's not an "activation" exercise... it's not a "finisher"... it's not going to help you "establish a better mind muscle connection".

It's a waste of time and energy, and even if you want to grasp at straws as to how "technically it still works the pecs *slightly* because of XYZ", it doesn't matter anyway because why bother when there are a million other exercises you could choose from that will be exponentially more effective.

Imagine trying to progressive overload with this workout, lol. Let me just slap another plate in between my hands.

The movement mimics an inverted row, very soon some influencer will promote it as a back exercise.

This is the only chest exercise I do... I currently use duct tape to hold four 45 lbs. plates in between my hands.

The basics have worked for over 200 years or more.

Why do these guys try to reinvent the wheel?

The net force acting on the weight is Force of gravity and the force of friction caused by the normal force, or applied force, so that workout would only fatigue your bicep and forearm.

Next thing you'll tell me is that my lying military press isn't good for shoulder development.
