What is a membrane sweep?
Показать описание
ACOG:
*Stripping or sweeping the amniotic membranes is commonly practiced to induce labor.
*Significant increases in phospholipase A2 activity and prostaglandin F2α (PGF2α) levels occur from membrane stripping.
From ACOG:
*Stripping membranes increases the likelihood of spontaneous labor within 48 hours and reduces the incidence of induction with other methods.
*Although membrane sweeping has been associated with increased risk of prelabor rupture of membranes,
other published systematic reviews, including one with 1,525 subjects, have not corroborated this finding.
*Those who undergo membrane stripping may experience discomfort from the procedure as well as vaginal bleeding and irregular uterine contractions within the ensuing 24 hours.
*There are insufficient data to guide clinical practice for membrane stripping in those whose group B streptococcus culture is positive.

I am a double board certified ObGyn and Maternal-Fetal Medicine specialist focusing on the care of people with maternal and/or fetal complications of pregnancy. I discuss hot topics related to fertility, pregnancy and the postpartum period, and do a little myth-busting and fact-checking to keep things real! Not only am I a doc, but I was also a patient who had infertility, a high-risk twin pregnancy and preterm delivery, and NICU stay at age 43 as a first-time mom--so I GET IT!
