I had it done at 41 1/2 weeks on a Monday and gave birth on Wednesday. I was warned it could be painful and might just cause cramps that don't actually start labour but, the goal was to avoid a hospital induction. I went into labor 14 hours after the membrane sweep which was nice because I was able to labor at home for a while before going to hospital. The membrane sweep wasn't necessarily painful I described it as having somebody stick their finger in the back of your throat and wiggling it. Not comfortable but not exactly painful either more weird. I would have it done again but, I don't understand why people are doing it before 40 weeks? I understand being pregnant sucks but, why rush the baby, they come when they're ready.

Used this as a last ditch effort at 41 weeks 6 days to avoid an induction. My doctor did a sweep at 10:30 am and I had my child in my arms a little after 5 pm same day. Needless to say i avoided that induction the next day lol.

I think this comment section highlights the importance of a good medical team that you can trust. For some women in these comments this process was a breeze with minimal discomfort, and for others it felt like the doctor was prodding them with a branding iron. Do you research ladies find the best doctor for you.

I just had this done today, this is my second child and I personally didn’t find it painful. To me it just felt like a lot of pressure and slightly uncomfortable. I felt very shaky all day after and I was surprised by how much energy it zapper but I didn’t find it insanely unpleasant. It hasn’t sent me into labor as of yet but it got me to 3 cm after being stuck at 1cm for 2 weeks.

Thank you for this educational moment. I didn’t know anything about this

The last little statement 'many people do find it painful' is not doing the actual pain level justice. My doctor attempted it but having a red hot poker shoved up there and stirred around in an effort to remove the actual cervix would not have been any more painful. I had to stop him because there was just no moving forward with that level of pain. I have broken bones before, been in a car accident, had surgeries and have never even been close to passing out from pain. This did it. I feel like it was invented by a man who may or may not have hated women. I'm joking, but it was like being assaulted when you're already in a ton of pain. Wow.

I have gotten this done with every pregnancy. Always a different result but never really hurt much.

Yep, I'm refusing any and all internal checks. In the UK you do not legally have to have them. They have other ways of checking that are much less invasive and painful.

It’s so painful and I wasn’t even asked if she could do that

Mine was very painful. Both times. But the pain doesn’t last super long. For my current 3rd pregnancy I’m opting to not have it done this time. And see how i progress on my own. Nervous but excited 🎊🤰🏽

I have a 7 week old and had this done on his due date. It caused me to have two days of bleeding and 18 hours of labour and my waters didnt break fully, the midwife had to break them. I would of liked to go straight to being induced but they insisted i have the stretch and sweep first. I honestly think it would have saved me a lot of stress if they let me skip this procedure 😢

My cousin had this at her 39th week appointment without consent. She told me the doctor basically just walked in didn’t even say a word just walked in put her in position and did it without even saying anything until my cousin was screaming at her to stop. She didn’t even show remorse she just said”Well you did say you didn’t want to be induce.” My sister did say this at her 36 week appointment cause the doctor and nurses scheduled a day for her to be induced when she reached 41 weeks. They scheduled this without my cousin’s consent or even knowing until the 36 week appointment

Yeah this was definitely more painful than giving birth. My doctor didn't tell me what she was going to do or why.
she just stuck her fingers in me and continued while I was yelling out in pain for her to stop. It happened so suddenly and for no reason. My son was born 30 hours later.

I just had it done today at 38w3d and it was painful. I think it hurts much more than a cervix check. It’s been 6 hours after the sweep and I haven’t felt anything yet
