The U.S. National Weather Service confirms at least 19 tornadoes touched down in Florida during Hurricane Milton's wrath.

Among the dozens of tornadoes was a twister that hit the tiny barrier island of Matlacha, just off Fort Myers. The fishing-and-tourism village also endured a surge, with many of the colorful buildings sustaining serious damage. Tom Reynolds, 90, spent the morning sweeping out 4 feet of mud and water and collecting chunks of aluminum siding torn off by a twister that also picked up a car and threw it across the road.

Eric Sorensen explains why this storm spawned so many of them.

Florida apparently has the highest ratio of tornados per square mile, more than any other state. but they are rarely as strong as they are in places like Kansas or Oklahoma. 90% are EF1-EF2

Yup high windshear around the isobars of the outside of the eye of the storm. Quasi Linear Convective System tornados.
