The early game is easily the most important part of any game of Civ, as it sets the stage for things to come throughout the rest of the game. This tends to be an area where a lot of people struggle, so in this video, I give you 3 steps to help you secure the early game every time!

Got this game about a week ago. Can someone help me understand the time distortion that happens? I swear I was playing for only 30 minutes but 4 hrs passed by.

So basically, we should embrace the three E's:
1. Expand
2. Explore
3. (potentially) EXTERMINATE!!!

First time I played Civ VI I got absolutely crushed because I played like how you're supposed to play on Civ V. Didn't know you had to spam out a hundred cities lol

We'll, that's my problem, I got used to Civ 5 building tall then using culture to absorb smaller nearby cities. That's a pretty big strategy change

I'm having fun with this game with just exploring the options and scouting around (I'm very new to this game) . However, always ultimately ends up in a defeat when other civilisation loves declaring war with me lol

I was having soo much fun playing this game and then I watched this and now I see I've not been playing very smart. I guess it is my first time ever playing so I'll just watch lots of these videos and learn how to be smarter instead of just clicking buttons.

Very good with a summary video! If possible, you should move it to the beginning of the playlist.

One criticism I have with wide in VI is that your cities either won’t scale up or will start consuming your precious amenities. This is good enough early on when just having a district is a good thing, but the cities end up being unproductive compared to the mad yields of tall cities. Then again, wide doesn’t really have to bother with housing and just needs a few good tiles or a higher adjacency districts per city to work, which makes placements less restrictive.

I think the best strategy is to have a powerful, tall “core” that produces the gold to kick start later cities in few turns and uses the extra district space for things that don’t quite fit your victory type (i.e. campus/theater/encampment when you aren’t going science/culture/domination and spamming them like crazy).

War early, war often. Stealing Settlers (and builders) is one of the easiest way to both cripple your opponent and strengthen your own position. I especially like this early aggression and settler stealing strategy with Rome, as you get a free monument in your free cities as well as a road connection; if you achieve military dominance over your neighbors early, you can essentially farm them for settlers and build a massive empire incredibly quickly. This will snowball your advantage so that you can keep farming your neighbors more and more as time goes on until you finally decide to put them out of their misery and conquer the rest of the world with your MASSIVE empire. This is obviously more difficult if your opponents are strong militarily, but on King you should be able to declare early wars without much of a risk when you see an enemy settler and capture it, use it to make a stronghold near your enemy's cities and fortify it with an encampment to really establish your farm with them. keep an eye on what they're doing at all times so you can seize any opportunity for grabbing a free settler. Builders aren't worth declaring a war over, but when you declare a war for a settler, you might as well pick up any undefended builders while you're at it. EDIT: also, pillage to your hearts content, a powerful military will easily pay for itself in the early game. The reality is that if one tribe focuses on farming land and the other on making swords, the latter will in the end have both the swords and the farms, same is true in Civ VI, and the worst mistake you can make is neglecting military.

Wide does not exclude tall. If you do both you just have to make up for your lack of amenmities. Some cards will give you amenities and also stuff like ancestral hall. What works best for me is to use the potential of each city. Cities with a great potential for mega production will be focussed on and grown as far as possible. Leave tall cities enough room to use their full potential and settle wide cities just as far away as necessary. This will make entertainment districts reach much further. At some point I will build entertainment districts anyways, just to keep all cities exstatic.
