Edmunds took ownership of a 2020 Tesla Model Y Performance last year as part of our long-term test program. Now, one year later, Carlos Lago shares the team's experience after approximately 9,000 miles of use.

What was it like to drive the Model Y for a year? How reliable was it? What kind of maintenance was needed and what issues popped up? What was the range on our Model Y? Is the Model Y one of the best small SUVs on the market? We answer these questions and more. We also detail the highs and lows of owning and driving the 2020 Tesla Model Y Performance.

I own a model 3 for one year now, Carlos’ opinions are 100% fact, But the car is unlike any other vehicle on the road and I love it and can’t wait for my model Y next.

32K miles on my Model Y and I haven't had nearly any of the issues outlined in this video... Sorry to hear that. I'm a big Tesla fan, but also honest. I'm not afraid to admit I have some panel gaps, AP has randomly hit the brakes, the display has frozen a time or two... the usual. Even so, this has honestly been the best car I've ever owned! The overall day to day experience is unlike anything else and I cant see myself buying another brand for a very long time. I have a CyberTruck reservation, so I'm looking forward to a review of that!
Also: at 12:12, you mention you have to pull over for the restart. Not sure exactly what you mean here, as you can perform the display restart while driving. I tested this myself, even Autopilot works fine while its restarting!

So basically, if you’d have purchased the Model Y AWD LR without FSD and with the smaller wheels, you’d probably not have all that much to complain about? That’s the version I would buy… so asking if that’s a fair assessment?

Very honest review, some things I agree with but I will say Tesla has improved the build quality of the 2021 Model Y’s considerably. Do compare if you guys have the chance!

Buying an electric mustang instead of a Tesla feels like buying a Zune over an IPod.

No need to pull over. Just hold in your thumbs to reboot. If you need to do it frequently please open a support ticket in your app.

You don't have to pull over, you can do the power cycle while driving it.

If the screen freezes, just like on an iphone, hold both buttons in for a few seconds and it will reboot. Most people are unaware that the screen computer and the cars computers are two separate things. There is no need to pull over, put foot on brake, etc.

Great review…Had a 2019 Model 3 with FSD, then bought a 2020 Y and didn’t waste the money on FSD. Sold the Y after only 6 months. Ride was way too rough compared to my 3 and it was just the LR AWD, non performance version. My Model 3 LR AWD was much smoother and compliant. Was put off by the initial quality of my Y…headliner hanging, dirty as all get up…panel gaps worse than normal, and a few other issues. Back seat alignment was very off…tires with the aero caps on them made loud creaking noises…Never got the shroud for the heat pump on mine, so it was noisy…I loved everything else about the car, but I’ll wait another year or so before considering another one…

Really enjoy videos like this and in general from Carlos. Not taking a shot at the other guys just think Carlos has got the presentation skills to a T.

Thus is a fair assessment… even with its quibbles, my Model 3 Performance is the best car I’ve ever owned, and I have zero regrets on buying it after a year.

Let's summarize, great car low maintenance, very efficient, Get different rims and tires if you not into sports vehicle harsh ride, don't trust EPA range - might need to reboot like your phone, don't buy FSD yet.

Agree with Carlos Lago's analysis of the Y Performance 100%, the FSD needs lots of integration and updating, the ride is extremely harsh and uncomfortable, no screen outages on mine, 7800 miles and its a '21 model, those wheels are beautiful but extremely easy to damage due to the fact that the wheel rims are flush with the outer edge of the tire walls, both passenger side wheels have curb rashes and me too use a black marker to minimize visible damage.

You contradict yourself by saying the MYP is really a family SUV yet you drag race the hell out of it. That is the beauty of the Model Y. It does both well plus it doesn’t use gasoline. Yeah the Corvette may ride better but you can’t take it skiing or go surfing.

To reboot the touchscreen you hold down both steering wheel scroll buttons. If you also push the break pedal as you recommend, you reboot the car. Big difference. Makes one wonder how well you really know the car.

You don’t have to pull over to reset the screen display. You can hold down the scroll wheels while still driving to reset the screen.

I can't tell you how refreshing it is to get a review from someone who isn't a zealot or fanboy. Honest reviews of life with a Tesla vehicle are far and few between. Personally when and if the day comes that I purchase an EV it will likely be a Tesla just for access to the undisputed best charger network...but it's nice to have real info when making that decision. Note to self - stay away from 21 inch wheels.
