3 signs of surgery anxiety

anxiety and depression have very real physical effects on the body, and they can heavily impact our moods and health through a variety of physical symptoms, many of which are apparent under anesthesia when you are connected to the life support monitors. I've connected myself to some monitors here in the operating room to demonstrate just how potent and apparent that affect can be in some individuals while under anesthesia having surgery. mental health matters! especially so in the operating room for surgery!

Really appreciate your videos about anxiety about surgery. I get panic attacks when I go into an OR. I shake and cry and hyperventilate. Glad to know I am not the only one.

Medicine sure has come a long way from the days when barbers doubled as surgeons. 😊

I've had about 30 surgeries. I have stayed awake for four of them. I had a hip surgery last summer, which required a general anesthetic. When the anesthesiologist talked to me just before my surgery, I asked for something to help me with anxiety. He gave me something and I slipped off to sleep easier. I was really happy I asked.

Just before I went under my whole body was shaking and trembling. They asked if I was cold but I think it was my nerves.

Because the body remembers trauma. Mine is medical trauma, so, yep….anxious for every procedure.

I had a panic attack last time I broke my ankle because they were going to do a nerve block in my knee pit and pulled out this big ass needle 😂 they had to give some sedation, but it didn't end up hurting anyway, just feeling hella weird 😅 shout out to them for being so understanding

A lot of doctors give way to much anesthesia in the first place. To much can trigger anxiety response in the body

My dentist told me I’ll never get fully numb for my fillings if my adrenaline is working overtime 🤔

I start coughing uncontrollably as they start rolling me towards OR door. Now, I make sure everyone is fully aware. I just had my ear tubes replaced in OR and the same team from 6 months ago. I remembered how I reacted and gave iv med in pre-op. As know it takes me long time to wake up. I was told an hour this last time

It’s really important that the doctor or nurse keep an eye on the heart rate, blood pressure etc because it could be a sign that the patient is “awake” and may not show sign’s because of the paralytic medication! Meaning that you feel everything but you can’t say anything or move because of the meds! What a literal nightmare!

I wish I could see my anesthesia report to see what the doctors saw. I was so freaked out about my surgery that I was in tears.

@Medical Secrets I would really like to talk to you about my experiences with PTSD/trauma and how anesthesia affected me. I know you have an alternative clinic that I will never be able to afford to go to, but my experience was so profound that it could actually change the way these things are treated. And I'd gladly volunteer for any study you do.
Anesthesia got me "unstuck" from fight or fight, which I had been stuck in for 3 years at that point. I only lasted for a couple of weeks, but it allowed my mind and body to finally rest. When it came back, it was just as bad. But the difference for me was that finally KNOWING normal was still accessible at some point. Haven't gotten there yet.... because there is no counseling available where I live 😢 I also have aTBI, so I'm the classic veteran combo... but not a Vet so 🤷‍♀️
it's really hard. But please take me seriously. I will try in the next few weeks to send you a letter with my info if you are interested. I'm just a few hours north in Mendo
Thanks. I really like this channel. Even with a nursing background I still learn things almost every episode!
And yes, lol, I'm probably annoying too since I ended up with patients after you guys are done.... so I see the crap you guys don't as far as recovery and problems. Unfortunately, can't get the PTSD under control so I'm no longer working. It's terrible to lose your career and the thing you love doing, because of someone else's evil behavior.

I remember going for an adenoidectomy at 12 and being on the table and they looked at my heart rate and low blood pressure (which is normal for me) and looked at each other all concerned and asked me questions to make sure I understood what was going to happen and the risks and everything involved. I told them I'd read about it and even watched a video on it, I just trusted them to do their job. They still seemed uneasy until they brought out the needle and my heart rate SPIKED immediately because I have a needle phobia. They weren't going to knock me out with gas but the numbing gel on the back of my hand hadn't worked and the needle hurt so much going in and the icy burning of the meds going up my arm made my heart rate increase so much that they used the gas to knock me out by around the same time the burning cold medication reached shoulder height. It was kinda funny because they were concerned and I was calm, then they were calm and I was concerned, then we were all looking worried as they grabbed the mask to knock me out before I freaked out any more.

I never knew exactly why they were concerned that I was calm. Maybe they thought I didn't have the procedure and risks explained to me or that my parents had given me a sedative or something. I just remember the worried glances, relieved chuckles at my initial response to seeing the needle, and then stressed looks again when I panicked harder.

I remember an awful taste in my mouth as well when they used the mask, like garlic breath and hospital antiseptics
