I have a deaf dog that doesn’t pull. A good retractable lead is very useful for communicating with him during walks because there is always tension on the line. A quick tap on the line lock, and my dog will turn to me looking for a hand sign.

These leads are tools, and like any tool, they have risks when used improperly.

It’s another useful tool in the toolbox when used properly. Unfortunately most don’t know how to use it right.

We are starting to use them for explosive detection dogs. They're great for open area searches. Way smoother than a long line. If you know how to handle a dog, it has advantages.

I felt the same way before my mentor taught me how to use one effectively. Now I prefer a flexi leash over anything else! A flexi leash and a flat collar is my go-to now that I actually have good handling and leash work skills!

I used to always use a slip lead or prong collar before I learned the skills that I have now! They're sitting around collecting dust meanwhile I use my flexi leash with a flat collar daily! I never thought I would see the day that I'd be saying this! But I'll never go back!

Oh, I use the flex all the time with my AKC obedience for go out and jumps and articles. I just love them for certain things, but not for the average pet owner

Flexi lead my 160 lbs Bullmastiff for years. Sure I could have used a lead line but who needs the arm shuffle. Flexi allows the dog to have freedom to heel precisely without pressure. It's like being off lead for the dog while you are meeting the letter of the law.Excellent product. German engineering. Used by two time IGP/Schutzhund World Champion trainer Ivan Balabanov.

I use flexi giant xl for my 10month mastiff who is 60kg and its absolutely fine, no problem what so ever. But everyone is different and everyone prefer different things. So up to them what they use as long as there dog is trained.

I have great control over my dog. I’ve had a flexi leash for many years and I am happy with it. I also don’t use collars because I don’t like to choke out my dog…
Only harnesses.

Flexi leashes are great for an off leash trained dog, or an acreage. The misunderstanding I think people have is why these are pretty terrible for urban walking in crowded areas. You can’t reel it in like a normal leash so control is limited. If you have an acre of land and just one dog these are fine.

The genuine Flexi brand ones made in Germany have held up pretty well, but come with justified warnings that it can cut and cause personal bodily injury to you or others if your dog is gets out of control. I now carry a heavy dual loop leash that can be held with a built in loop close to the collar along with me to attach to my reactive girl if I forsee some drama approaching😂

We live in a rural area with nary other dog interactions. We love our "flexi" leash and will continue to use them. "Professionals" can take their opinions and stuff it.

I have used flexi leashes for years and NEVER had a problem with them. I use the TUG brand and it's very durable. They never get tangled up and it gives my 12 pound Bichon a lot of freedom for him to explore. I know how to handle this leash better than any other type of leash. I also love that it retracts all the way where I can keep my dog very close to me on busy streets. I actually tried using regular leashes and couldn't get used to them.

If your dog is trained, it shouldn't be breaking a Flexi... I use large dog Flexi leashes on my 25 lb. terriers... I like letting them roam on leash... One command, and their at heel... Walking them on long, non retractable leads would drag the leads through loads of dog crap from owners that don't pick up after their dogs... When I walk my dogs it's for their enjoyment... to break up the monotony of their day, and for exercise... not a tool to follow me around, totally focused on me, waiting for a bit of praise or a treat reward...

As an Army MWD handler, Flexi leads are awesome. And they hold up well to our K9's as long as you know how to use them. They are not "garbage" but rather take more skill to use than they are advertised. The average person walking their pet should practice the mechanics of a flexi before using it on a powerful dog.

If you know how to “work your leash like a pro”, it doesn’t matter what kind of leash you use.

Try having a husky, we are still training off leash 2 years later we have a heavy 20m lead for fields. Short bungee for controlled walks.

Retractable leads at least strong ones have a place. When I'm on a field I can use an extra long version to quickly let him run. Rather than having the long lead that Is less compact and gets dirty easier.

In my opinion it depends what you use it for. It’s trash if you use it because your dog pulls and you don’t want to deal with that it’s bad. But if you use it instead of a long leash when mantrailing and similar stuff it can be useful.

I use a flexi lead often because alot of area’s require your dog to be on the lead.
My dog is well trained.
Its more like a loophole lead, technically on the lead but gives my dog more enjoyment and freedom. I always carry her main lead to for when near roads etc.

“You need a flexi leads license” had me literally in 😂

My dog weighs 10 kg and it’s perfect, maybe don’t use it for a Great Dane, but for my dog it’s fine it gives him more freedom when walking in parks they can’t be off leash in, it’s not garbage just try to consider that not everyone has a humongous work dog, small and medium dogs exist pal.
