I love ours. I like to give the dogs a little freedom. Also, the non-retractable leashes drove me crazy because I felt like they would end up under my feet half the time.

These are brilliant leads if you have the training in place to use one. If your dog can walk off lead, like mine, then i do not need a solid lead and he is walking beside me. And if we walking in area’s were he can have a sniff around then that perfect but still safely under control. I am a dog owner who keeps he dog on a lead even though i do not need to because thats the responsible thing to do.

I used a retractable leash to take my dog out to potty due to being in a wheelchair, i cant go onto the grass so to take her out, i use a retractable leash to let her roam the yard, we do use a normal leash when going on walks, or anywhere thats not just going potty recently the retractable leash broke it no longer retracts, but she has a pretty good recall so shes been going out off leash until i can get her a new one, however, i have to go when no other dogs in the apartment building are out, none of them are aggressive and neither is she, but she gets too excited and will run up to them to play.

I don't use a retractable leash for my puppy. She's a small dog but she sure does love running with the big dogs! Cheers!

The speed of the retraction and the thinness of the leashes tend to be dangerous.

Please list some more negative training reasons on why not to use a retractable, none of the issues you mention are really an issue with my K9, would be interested in knowing some more of the training difficulties and bad habits associated with retractable vs fixed leashes.

These leashes were not designed for the John Q common public to use in the first place but for tracking dogs out in the open wilderness to give hunting/scenting dogs some slack. There are two big problems with extendable leashes. One the basic HEEL command that and the bond teaches your dog YOU are in control and are the master of his/her walks goes right out the window. The dog should be even with you heel and should only venture off ie to do its business whilst on leash when you permit them. I can't tell how many times dog owners seem to be happy to let their dogs walk their owners instead have no control or even let some dogs walk into danger while the owner isn't even paying proper attention! The second thing is the length and flexibility of the line is a tripping tangle and potential choking hazard to the dog, you and in some cases, other parties you walk near.
