You got the right idea. My gripe with YouTube videos is that people talk way too much. People need to learn to stop bloviating and condense the important information. Good on you!

Finally someone who goes straight to the point not telling a story what they ate for breakfast before the tutorial

Whoa, , Scott, what about the intonation?

something i’ve always had a problem with that i’ve wanted answered is how i can eliminate fret buzz because sure i can i adjust the truss rod all day and lower and raise my strings but i always have too much buzz. i’ve been setting up instruments for a year because i didn’t wanna pay someone every time i got a new bass.

If I may, I recommend adding a capo to your tool list. Capo at first fret to hold down the strings while you measure things out will save you a ton of effort. Also keeps the strings in their slots when you take the neck off.

And yeah, what’s a set up without discussion of intonation, pickup height and nut height?

Don't you need to re-set your intonation if you've adjusted the truss rod and string height?

How tf does YouTube know I just picked up a new bass

Often overlooked, that action...
Usually it's kept too high, mainly to avoid any buzzing, but fact is:
You'll hardly hear that buzzing over an amp anyway, and lower action means your bass is a lot easier to play 👍😜
Don't go too low, though. You do want to give your strings room enough to vibrate freely across the fretboard...

Getting the perfect tone is a matter of finding the sweet spot on both string height ánd pickup distance!!
🤘😎

That's a lot lower than how I want my guitars setup. Completely different world. Amazing.

Need a slower version for real newbies. That was simple to you but no help to true newbies.

Ah god, seeing the neck off the body made me feel for my bass.
I don't ever wanna see my bass in two pieces.

I had a Fender Squire for the last 14 years, the truss rod broke. Now my bass has a crazy bow to it. So sad 😞 i haven been able to play since and wont be able to play again until i get it fixed or just get a new bass. Which will be some time before then.
