What's funny is that in one episode of SpongeBob, Mr. Krabs actually threatened to keelhaul SpongeBob. Being a kid you don't realize Mr. Krabs was essentially threatening to have his employee executed in a brutal fashion.

"Didn't suffer as much"... No, you suffered *more, * you just suffered faster.

I'd prefer dying of exhaustion and drowning over the barnacle barrage on my spine

Drowned or getting roughly peeled like a carrot. Your pick. Also a great Alestorm song

Mr. Krabs: "I'll kill ya'!"
Nickelodeon execs: "You need to sensor that."
"Mr. Krabs: "I'll Keel-haul ya'!"
Execs: "What's that mean?"
Stephen Hillenburg: "It's a meaningless pirate term."

I don't know if I would call the quick way better because it would definitely be more painful to have your flesh ripped from your body then drowing at least in my opinion.

Keelhullingn wasn’t always to the death though, sometimes it was just a punishment.

Blackbeard's execution in Black Sails, one of those scenes you skip on a rewatch because it's too hard to watch.

*starts to realize that singing along to Keelhauled by Alestorm isn't as great as I thought it was*

For the longest time I had no idea why keel hauling was supposed to be so bad, aside from likely drowning, but then I realised that barnacles exist.

fun fact: whilst practiced by the ancient greeks as far back as 700BC the practice of keel-hauling or "kielhalen" was an official punishment later adopted and first mentioned by the Dutch in 1537. Usually the punishment came along with a sponge which the killed person could bite upon during the execution.

My great-great grandfather wanted to go to sea when he was about 15. He stowed himself aboard a ship one day, only to discover (too late) that it was a pirate vessel... He was keel-hauled (and didn't die) so they let him live, only for him to be keel-hauled once again (and again, he survived) they were afraid that he was bad luck for them, so, they cast him off the ship when they made landfall again. (Spoiler: he made it safely "out West" because, I'm alive.) He never called it "keel hauled" instead, it was referred to as the ultimate punishment."

"Y'know I hear they used to keelhaul traitors...I don't have a keel to haul you from so this'll have to do." - Captain Malcom Reynolds

A good reminder is pirates didn’t usually work out like how you see in the movies. They didn’t go in, kill everyone and plunder all. They heavily worked off using terror to get their ways. If you want prime examples, look at how mad Blackbeard was, even his own crew was terrified of him. Pirates usually kept their grip with a fist of terror and brutality. They didn’t have the resources to go in and kill everyone, plus that was no way to sell slaves, take crew for your own ship and was a much quicker line down to execution for having a higher number on your head.
