There was an execution method that has been criticized for its potential to cause unnecessary suffering and pain.
it used to take a significant amount of time for a person to die, which could cause them to experience extreme suffering and pain. Some people from history labeled it as the most harsh execution of that time.

In march 1974, together with Salvador Antich, Georg Michael Welzel was the last person to be executed by the Garotte.
His dying lasted 30min since the executioner didn't know how to handle his device.

Very seldom did the garotte have a spike. This was intended to be merciful as it snapped the spine. Basically you were slowly strangled to death with the garotte.

The Brazen Bull

What was the brazen bull? The brazen bull was a contraption of torture and execution used by the Ancient Greeks and Romans to punish their enemies. This life-sized bull-shaped statue of brass or bronze was hollow so that victims could be locked inside its stomach and then roasted alive. Flute-like pipes would carry the victim's screams through the bull's nostrils, creating bellowing animalistic music while the smoke of the scorched flesh billowed out as puffs of incense. Way meaner and entertaining, if you’re into performance art.

Just found out this is how GomBurZa were executed. As a Filipino student they never taught us how they were executed. I always assumed they were hanged.

On 4.46: That was a sadistic model. Original the carote was a strangulation pall; meaning; the band around the throat was pulled tide.
Later a pin was added; supposed to break the spine.
However, by turning the spindle, then two things happened: the victim was strangled and by pulling the band, the pin was forced in the neck; which caused the most pain.

If the garotte is well made and the executioner is well trained on operating said instrument, the victims don't suffer at all. The garotte causes instant and painless death by breaking the victims neck.

The torture usually happens when the garotte used is "cheaply made" with some random hired bloke with no clue how to operate a garotte becomes the executioner.
