Pro tip: marry a portuguese speaker so they're contractually obligated to stay with you and you can practise all the portuguese you want

We're down to our last few days of our month in Portugal. Your lessons have ever been a great help, though admittedly most of my conversations were some type of greeting and saying obrigado.

Thanks Liz. I read this and went straight to a community page on Facebook and asked for a Portuguese language partner. Wish me luck 😅

I don't agree that people should wait to speak until they have some more knowledge of the language. Speaking is very good practice and will help you learn faster and retain the information better. I'm sure there are people out there who would help a newbie out and speak slowly and correct their mistakes if needed. And if a conversation is a bit daunting, speaking to yourself is a good starting point too.

I’ll have to ping those two ladies on the community. I live in Portland as well and would love to chat with someone in Portuguese

Vale a pena? Sim!

I’m in Portugal and it’s still hard! But taking Pilates has helped (although I know all these terms I can’t use anywhere else - Dobrar os joelhos,
Esticar as pernas, Mãos na cabeça). And now I’m in physical therapy and get to practice my speaking. They are happy to correct and I’m teaching them American slang (physical terrorist, hump day). 2 for the price of 1!

Love your site, but I just wanted to say that conversational skills have nothing to do with the words you know. I have a friend in Berlin who knows about 164 English words, but she can tell stories in English that have people in fits of laughter. Many native speakers of a language have no conversational skills at all and talking to them is like drawing blood from a stone. Just saying.
