"The belief is based on the legend of a black goat farmer named Oscar Washburn, who was said to have moved his family to a residence just north of the bridge. A few years later, Washburn, having become known as a dependable and honest businessman and dubbed the "Goatman" by locals, displayed a sign on Alton Bridge reading "This way to the Goatman". But the success of a black man was still unwelcome to many, and, in August 1938, Klansmen in the local government crossed the bridge and kidnapped Washburn from his family. They hung a noose on Old Alton Bridge and, after securing it around his neck, threw him over the side. When they looked down to see if he had died, the noose was empty. In a panic, they returned to his family home, burning the house along with his wife and children."

the goat man is actually a kind man when he was human because he was a goat farmer, and his name was Oscar Washburn and so he was on this bridge to his house (the Goat Mans bridge it was actually called Oscar Washburn's bridge) and then the KKK group attacked him and put him in a noose and threw him off the bridge freaking brutal but anyway so they went away then they came back and they didn't see him (Oscar Washburn) so they thought: "oh he must have gone to his house to hide or something" so they went to his house and burned it no knowing that Oscar Washburn's family is in there so when Oscar Washburn came back as a ghost he found the burnt down house and with anger and sadness he multiplied into a goat man and this goat man isn't a human spirit its actually Oscar Washburn's feelings and hate and anger and all the negative things in him so yah.
