And you can tell by the description in their stories that they always think that a window is a skinwalker. The only thing that you kind of messed up on: according to Algonquin and Cree legends, they don't have deer antlers or deer skulls. That's a social construct made up by Anglo-Saxon Americans.

The Wendigos actually didn’t have deer skulls. It’s actually a similar creature called a Wechuge that had the skull.
Wechuge were basically just werewolves, while the Wendigo is the magical punishment for cannibalism.
Mutating into a form more like The Rake or SCP 096 while still remaining sentient, forced to become the carnivorous monster that they chose to be for breaking a taboo.

People have been speaking a lot about stuff they shouldn't even been thinking about. Skinwalkers are said to be sorcerers that prey on vulnerable victims after they cease to live as human beings by their own choice. They're not obvious violent predators, they're subtle. They scare their victims and are said to put them under the effects of sorceries instead of outright attacking. The skinchanging thing is supposed to be imperfect and one of the easiest ways to spot them (missing tail, extra limb, human features while turned into an "wild beast", weird limp, etc). A dog opening a door is probably just a dog (I have eight dogs and they all realized how doors are used by people. One of them even steal stuff from the fridge if you don't keep a look on him). Wendigo, though, are brutes. Apparently, they're people driven to cannibalism, possessed by something that's always hungry and they hunt like you'd probably expect a very aggressive bear to. The dear skull thing and the antlers or horns,
are very much said to be a myth. They may look like very thin, deformed and savage people, inhumanly strong, fast and certainly starving. Evil stuff aren't always as flashy as media makes them look.

IF I had to be one then I would go with the Skinwalker as they are still people and don't lose themselves due to their transformations. Honestly speaking I have only seen in some stories/tells about very few if any real down sides to being a Skinwalker. Though unlike the Skinwalker you lose yourself due to the Wendigo transformation, you may keep your intelligence though ultimately you are consumed by the need to feed (mostly on human flesh though in some tells any flesh well do, though human flesh draws them more). A Wendigo might use that intelligence to lure people into a trap...
