Are you interested in studying engineering or STEM but wonder if worried that you're not smart enough? Is there a minimum IQ that will get you to graduation? And if so, can you increase your IQ to fill the gap?

Your channel was one of the reasons I wanted to go down the route of engineering and I have just received 2 civil engineering degree apprenticeship offers in the UK!

i think the most important component of progressing in any field is genuine interest and a natural insatiable curiosity

In my opinion as a 2nd year civil engineering you need is basic mathematics and some basic physics that's it. And of course a brain which is functioning if it's not functioning it means your dead then you cannot purse engineering 😅

I ain't giving up although I'm failing most of my exams and could still pass barely. I can improve myself even more and have the potential to get an A's and to finish the journey as an engineering student. Thanks for this video!

I was always a slow reader with poor comprehension. Then in about my second year of college one day I started speed reading. Self taught. Later I learned my IQ was 135 so I think I was sort of stuck in slow mode. Turns out I also had a fast forward. I found sitting though classes to be boring and unproductive. So started studying more and going about half my classes. People with high IQs actually have a overactive brain than presents it's own challenges. I've often thought my life may have been better if I was 120 or so.

I took the WAIS test and was slightly over mid 120 a few years ago and thought the average was 135 for the harder engineering degrees. I've been stressing over it a lot, I'm 32 with a GED and was homeschooled with a bad education (Mostly creationist junk.) I have worked trades/run a lawncare business my whole life but have always been obsessed with engineering.

I specifically am deeply interested in propulsion systems like hall effect thrusters and anything stupid fast/powerful. I'm kinda realizing I'll have to go for a Master's or beyond to work on projects like that and don't want to waste my time if only geniuses can really expect to pursue such things.

I'm in a point in my life where I don't worry about money anymore and can just do it but honestly I'm scared and feel like if I'm not naturally capable of it I'll waste a lot of time when I can make more money doing things I already do and just get into math and engineering as a hobby at home.

If anyone has any advice I appreciate it, I don't care about ego only truth so hit me.

Idk I just got a bachelors in mechanical engineering but I feel like an idiot 😅 there’s always more to learn and experience to be gained.

There was a ongoing joke at my university that all the "for engineers" classes were actually remedial.

I had a pretty lousy GPA in high school. Went to the military then went for a bachelor’s degree in technical writing as a mediocre student. Fast forward a couple years, went back to school for a Mechatronics certification. I had to pass a math placement exam. I studied a lot and passed. Out of 18 students I was one of seven that graduated. I’ve been an automation tech for almost 7 years now. I’m looking to start an engineering program to advance my career. I hope my experience as a technician will help me with the classes. In any case, I’ve been able to retrain my brain from lazy, to military, to a humanities degree to STEM. I’m nervous to fail so if anyone has a similar background I’d love to hear your thoughts.

My Mensa IQ results were in the 'High Average' range.

This is about the basic IQ range needed to do a bachelor's degree.

I bought your book recently to find out what it takes to become an engineer in the midst of losing confidence in myself over not passing Calculus 2 successfully in college.

The problem I have observed in schools, is that they offer a learning path based on memorizing instead of understanding. This leads people being able to complete simple mechanical tasks required to pass the courses, but without reaching the ability to improvise.

And guess what, we can use computers and AI for that. So such graduates would find very limited success in the present world and next to no success in the world of the future.

So why are schools doing that? Why are they pointlessly focused on getting people to pass the test rather than requiring them to understanding the ideas behind the methods?
Reason 1, less capable people are allowed in the schools, reason 2, money talks. Often making people to pass is being financially encouraged, incentives.

So my point is, maybe you can become whatever you want in current schooling system, since understanding is not really required. But is that a good thing?

Is it a good thing that people who are not able to grasp the realities of the situation, are allowed to make decisions on them?

I don't think so. And this is quite evident in his conclusion on the video. His focus point on graduation rather than becoming efficient in creating actual value, is one of the clear giveaways.

Can someone improve their IQ by practice? To some degree, up to a point, maybe. But to state that there would be no baseline requirements is simply wrong. I have also heard about a study, where less fortunate students were given best possible education to improve their results. There was some improvement measured, but as time went on and the intensive coaching/training ended, their results dropped back to their baseline.

So if the IQ improvement was temporary, just to pass the school, that would also be disservice to society. Later on that person couldn't maintain the level and would become a sloppy worker in a demanding job, causing not only financial loss, but possibly even danger.

I hold a B.S.E.E year 1, 200 students, year 5, 50 earned their degree. I went on to earn a M.S. Computer Science, which was the best investment. In USA, not much demand for E.E. due to US exporting most of its manufacturing over seas.

And I want to get into mechanical engineering cause I wanna help someone close to me who had a condition that limited their physical and that has been my main inspiration to get into mechanical engineering and help people

Most people haven’t had their IQ measured properly so it’s not really that useful to most people. Even a properly administered IQ by a doctor can have questionable accuracy, especially if it’s low.

He didn't cover the range of STEM occupations. Like where are physicists, research boi related occupations. So directed only at engineering is limited. One would still need a guidance counselor.
