I had a dealer rep keep asking me about what monthly payment i wanted. I said let's negotiate price and I'll worry about the monthly payment. He was stuck. Kept asking me about my desired monthly payment after I told him repeatedly let's talk price. He didn't get the sale.

The question is....was that work REALLY necessary or just the dealership trying to bump up the bill?

Rule one never go to a dealer for work, find a good repair shop that treats you good and keep going back to that shop. Get a second inspection on what needs to be fixed.

Light housings can be made to look virtually brand new with a little polishing compound and elbow grease ($10).

And, when the dealerships says . " Yes, but our guys are Company trained to do the work on our vehicles " and not those off brand mechanic's. Then say what ?

or lease -- and you'll never pay a dime for maintenance cuz it's all under warranty before you turn it in for a new one. and if it's bmw, volvo or others that do oil and other services for "free" for 36k miles or so (i know it's tagged into pricing) -- ZERO dollars at the service dept. :)

I take both of mine Nissan's to the dealer for oil changes and tire rotation because of convince and when they say I need something do I go to my reliable mechanic that use. The dealer will always tell you that you are getting genuine manufacture replacement parts but don't fall for that bullcrap because I have seen invoices at the front desk where the dealer has bought part from a nearby parts store.

Reference brake rotors, have to be careful. Dealer may have using OEM rotors whereas the low bid may have used sketchy Chinese made junk that won't last.

I had a Honda dealer tell me you can’t order vehicles anymore this weekend

On the brakes there could be a huge difference in the quality of the brake rotors and the pads even.

For the fogged over ight casings all is need is a some water and soap to clean the casings of any debris, some soft scrub or other non abrasive gel cleaner a non abrasive sponge, an hours woth of time and some elbow $7.00 max.... and that should remove the haze that has formed over the casing unless the casings are cracked and allowing water and other moisture into the units. Did this to my parents 08 outlander and they are as good as new.

I’ve replaced my own rotors and pads before, fairly straightforward job. Rotors are commodities, large hunks of steel so just buy whatever generics you can find and they’ll work fine. Pads vary much more in material, quality, performance so don’t skimp but they’ll still be cheaper than anything the dealer is charging. I also had a trusted mechanic who would do the labor if I brought him the parts which is another good way to save. The dealer will always be your most expensive repair option.

Shopping for mutiple repairs can be than buying a car. Nit onky doi some repairs have overlapping work, there's an added cost to having work done by multiple shops in time lost and inconvenience. If you are going to use competive pricing, only do it for well defined mechanical jobs that don't require addiditonal diagnosis fees. Look at shops with ASE certified techs that can "do" everything and compare their totals, availability and the turnaround time quoted, before going to a dealer for a competitive price or going to more places to save a few more bucks.

I had to go to a dealer for service on my 2004 Toyota Solara a few months ago because I needed a special part that my normal repair shop didn't have access to get. I bought it used in 2006 from a private seller. I hate dealerships. My next car will be another used one from a private seller once this one eventually dies so I don't have to deal with dealership games.
