My favourite book of the year so far is The Last Cuentista by Donna Barbra Higuera. It's a sci-fi dystopian with lots of Mexican folklore woven throughout it. It's marketed as middle-grade, but deals with some very dark topics and is absolutely brilliant!

Regarding What Willow Says - (I think I ordered this last week from Blackwells)- I grew up with a younger deaf brother and worked with deaf children, youth and adults for 50 years - 45 in education. I am also a linguist and my work for 30 years focused on deaf children and youth who were immigrants or from immigrant families. There is a linguistic term for signs/sign languages that deaf children create to communicate with their families - Home Signs. Many immigrant deaf children who arrive at US schools using Home Signs and the sign language of their home country are too often labeled "languageless". The topic of Home Signs has been important to me in my advocacy for these students. They can/usuall do provide a foundation for learning a sign language with a fully developed grammar and vocabulary such as BSL and ASL. While the research is limited, it is powerful. I have also taught adult students who started out life in rural settings in other countries, who come to master ASL, get college degrees, and show the brilliance that is in there ready to be let out.

I've read "Elena sabe" (spanish version) because of one of your reviews. I have to thank-you for it, it is a very good written book that I've enjoyed a lot, despite being a hard story.
Your reviews are becoming a good reference for me, when I want to read a book and don’t know which one to choose. You're awesome💜☺

I have not ready any of these but a few sound interesting! My favourite reads of the year so far are Piranesi by Susana Clarke, Mrs March by Virginia Feito, and The Hole by
Hiroko Oyamada. I sadly had not had very good luck this year with my reading so there's only three... (thank you for the Mrs March recommendation btw :))

Hearing you talk about Elena Knows, I feel like you would enjoy Elizabeth is Missing by Emma Healey, which is one of my favorite books of all time. It's about a woman with dementia who leaves notes for herself to remember things she forgets and from one of those notes she is convinced her friend Elizabeth is missing. I couldn't put it down and finished it in a day.

What a great list 😀 I really want to read Elena Knows. I have Kindred on my shelves and I will definitely be reading it soon. Thank you so much for reminding me about The Barbellion Prize. I was not aware of it until you spoke about it in your previous videos. I'm going through the website and adding books to my ever growing wish list. Much appreciated

My favorites this year so far are Imaginary Friend, The Dragon Republic, Promise of Blood, The Blade Itself, Plain Bad Heroines, Engines of Empire, Once Upon a Broken Heart, Son of Shadows, Dune, Dragon Reborn, Ashoka, Peace and Turmoil, The Bone Ships. I enjoyed my reread of Pride and Prejudice and I'm loving The Other Bennet Sister. I really connect with Mary Bennet, though I like novels unlike herself.

Kindred sounds wonderful. I definitely want to read some Octavia E. Butler this year. I'll have to decide where to start! ☺

Great video as always!

I will say for anyone curious about reading Creatures of Passage, look up the trigger warnings. Some of the content in that book extremely difficult and sometimes explicitly on page

I read and loved Frida Kahlo And My Left Leg. Simply exquisite! I just received This One Sky Day per your recommendation. I am also so excited to read Itza, What Willow Says, 100 Queer Poems, and Elena Knows. I am also listening to Frida in America and can't wait until Unmask Alice comes out on Audible.

I read We Don't Know What We're Doing a few years ago and enjoyed it very much.

The bit you read from Itza reminded me of The Boatman's Daughter, which uses "gothic nature" throughout. I would recommend that to you, unless you've read it.

There's a scene in Kindred about a slave giving birth, and I will never ever forget the horror of that scene, it's absolutely heartbreaking. I like Octavia E Butler's short stories too.
Totally agree that great circle really faded for me too!
Just bought what willow says 👍🏻
I think my fave of the year so far is the wolf den by Elodie Harper. Also currently listening to Know My Name by Chanel Miller which is incredible, but was past June! Xx
