Our sirens are tested every year on the same day at noon, so we always joke that this is the best time to invade Denmark as everyone will ignore them.

🇩🇰As I was born and raised in Denmark I don't personally hear the potato in the mouth thing when we speak, but it's funny and completely fine if foreigner's hear it that way😂
And I guess it helps make it harder to learn to speak the language, which a part of me thinks is low-key kinda cool ...😆

Denmark is very very cold during winter, but it's been YEARS since we had a white christmas. But apart from that, Danish summer is actually pretty warm. Like u can walk with just a hoodie ( or none ) at afternoon. I just can't wait for summer honestly, it's the best. Apart from the water being literally freezing even tho we have around the 20-25 degrees. Which is considered cold in other countries, but warm for us here.

Fun fact;
In the early 1970s, the Queen was inspired to illustrate The Lord of the Rings. She sent her illustrations to Tolkien, who was struck by the similarity to the style of his own drawings. In 1977, Queen Margrethe's drawings were published in the Danish translation of the book (Ringenes Herre, edition by publishers Gyldendal; one illustration for each chapter), redrawn by the British artist Eric Fraser. Under the pseudonym Ingahild Grathmer, her illustrations were also featured in a British edition of The Lord of the Rings, published by The Folio Society.

As a faroese person, I find it kinda fun to speak danish. Most of the time we use it satirically portraying the "jysk" population (peaple of Jylland) because it reminds us of hill billy speak, but in danish. BTW if you want to learn more about the Faroe Islands, then I would recommend watching The Best Ever Food Review Show with Sonny. He made a detailed documentary about Faoese cuisine and culture.

The reason why Noma is no longer on the list, is due to a new rule where previous winners can no longer participate in the competition.
Instead Noma has now been included in a group of previous winners called "Best of the best".

If I were to define Danish as a language and why it confuses others I think a large part of it is the way we talk. A lot of times in English when you're talking, there's fairly hard stops with pronounciations, whereas in Danish you often "slur" the words into each other forming a longer stream of words that are fully understandable to someone who speaks the language, but is more difficult to catch on to for others.

The sirens are tested silently every night, and at full power once a year, the first wednesday of May at 12 noon.

I’m American and moved to Denmark in 2020. I’m STILL trying to learn the Danish language 2.5 years later. I don’t know how everyone else learns it lol. I guess I don’t have a natural ear for languages, so yeah it can be difficult 😂

Yeah, the Danish language is hard to learn for most people, and it sound a lot more guttural than Norwegian, that have a feminin twist to it, and Swedish, that are in-between, but more song-like.
Hope you are going to like it here 🙂

Fun history fact:
The reason why Danes have such an easy time to learn English and speak it, is because back in the viking era, danish vikings went to England and made it part of Denmark called Danelagen which means Danelaw. The english language was affected by the danish due to it. Words like ice/is, fish/fisk, bread/brød and door/dør are some examples.

The potato thing you asked about is probably just dependant on where you originate from. As a dane, when I was learning french I was taught to pretend to have a hot potato in my throat to make certain sounds. It's kinda in the same boat as: "which languages is most difficult to learn?" Well depends on how close the language you're learning is to your mother tounge.

I also heard somewhere that vitamin D was counted in the anti depression consumption study, which is pretty misleading if that's the case, since that's a pretty necessary vitamin to take during winter months here.

I think the reason why Noma isn’t number one anymore, is because the ones who decide which restaurant is the best, have changed the rules, so the same restaurant can’t be number one for more than one year, but can still be an honourable mention or something. They changed it to this because the restaurants kinda have an ego and it’s better to not be permitted the first place than to loose it. This is something I heard a while back in the radio when Geranium became number one. So, I’m writing this from my memory and might therefor not be correct :)

Fun fact: Thanks to Hans Island, which is split down the middle, Denmark (and thus the EU) shares a land border with Canada.

To be fair, we are invaded by germans every summer...
They occupy most of our summer vacation rental houses and camping spots for a few months, and then they are forced to retreat back to Germany when fall arrives!

It's probably in retaliation for our almost daily raids on border shops, where we take short raiding trips just over the german border (by ferry or by car), and raid a lot of cheap booze, soda and candy. And the raids have become such an accepted thing, that even the german and danish border guards allow it, as long as it's for personal use, and you at least carry valid ID if they ask...
