HUMANKIND | REVIEW - NEW Historical 4X Strategy Game to Challenge Civilization

HUMANKIND, after a couple of delays, is finally coming out. Through OpenDev and a few closed Betas, we've had the chance to play and impact the development of the game, but now the time has come to see the results, and review the final product. Does HUMANKIND have what it takes to be among the greatest strategy games of all time, if not at least one of the best strategy games of 2021? Does HUMANKIND's culture and era system and reliance on fame do enough to differentiate it from games like Civilization? Is HUMANKIND going to flourish, or is it in a state of crisis?

Reviewing this type of games is not an easy task, you have to play hundred of hours to experience everything. But you have done a great job as always. 🙏

This is everything I wished Civ 6 was, down to the urban sprawl. It's gorgeous, mechanically diverse, and the battles look SO GOOD

Love how all Amplitude games use the same icons for It's a small thing, but I like the consistency and it shortens the learning curve.

I have high hopes for this game. The studio has been very keen to change things and improve, so the issues with depth will be fixed. Give it a year for them to add some stuff and sand off some edges and it will be glorious.

Thank you for your honesty about Gamepass I honestly could not have blamed you for omitting that information. It shows that you take your reviews seriously and I really appreciate it!

You just can't emphasise enough how much fun and tactical battles can be in Humankind. Rules are quite simple (and very well communicated with players through clear and beautiful looking UI) yet they offer a deep challenging and addictive gameplay, especially in higher difficulties (Nation/Empire/Civilization). I enjoyed fighting so much that at some point all I wanted to do was to become a warmonger razing the whole map.

I've poured over 400 hours into Civilisation VI and countless hours into Civ V. I am really looking forward to giving this a go, I'm hoping for a fresh take on the genre and something more fleshed out. Humankind definitely seems like the kind of game that will continue to get updates and DLC as time goes on. I hope it gets the same amount of dedication and regular updates as Civ.

You are being recommended in the comment section of IGN for doing the far better review.
Seems like people are spreading your review Expertise through the big boy ranks.

Your review style is amazing. Clean, concise, everything covered. No rambling. Just awesome.

Also, I love this game! I agree with 99% of points you made and I really can't wait to see the future of this game.

Nice review! Glad to see another developer making a 4X Civ-type game since I was pretty disappointed by Civ 6. I think some competition in this genre will be a good thing.

For a base "Civ game" it looks pretty damned good to me. Heck, most of Firaxis' Civ games don't get truly amazing until the 1st or 2nd paid expansion. So I am willing to cut Amplitude some slack.

Really love this review, good mix of flushing out components and highlighting strengths/weaknesses - much better than the ign review (where I found this review and am now sub'd)
1. thoughts on the late game pacing/excitement of humankind?
2. kinda related - how does the AI feel and are there any significant changes in difficulty scaling?

-In civ6 a lot of my friends and I are so captivated and love the early/mid game, but even on high difficulties the end game can kinda feel like waiting for certain upgrades or numbers to climb in the win condition when we are playing with AI. More often than not we never finish games because the end just drags and the beginning is so exciting... maybe that's just a reality of all 4x games as you expand into later stages.
-I think one gripe in civ is the lack of dynamic AI when it comes to different difficulties (in that they largely act the same way and dont necessarily get smarter). Does the fluidity of civilization development in humankind naturally make for more diverse AI?

Party, if you didn't get a pre-release press build I truly don't know why / how you got overlooked. I have really been looking forward to seeing your Humankind content and playthroughs :)

So far you're the only reviewer I've come across to actually like the changing civs you can do over time. The way you explain it is exactly how I remember reading that it was supposed to be from months ago...namely, that the Legacy Traits end up making your final civilizational form something unique (you could end up as the Soviets 5 times, but if you take different cultural roads to get there, each iteration of Soviets will be different). Every other reviewer seems to have missed this entire point. Major props, man!

Great review, additionally, I can't stress enough how you were so on point on the exploits of war support issues. Hope there's a patch or possibly limitations of being spammed with absurd demands.

Thank you so much for reviewing Humankind! I really loved watching your beta videos. Can we expect a full play through to start soon? I need more PartyElite videos to bing watch. I hope the move is going well! Thanks again.
