What an excellent scene. I can't believe this wasn't in the theatrical cut. This is the kind of stuff that was missing from the Hobbit movies that really set the stakes and grounded the characters. This scene outlines why they are going to Erebor, why they must Kill/force Smaug the dragon to flee (because of dark forces)/ and gives some nice backstory to Thorin. I'm still of the opinion if they mixed the best of the scenes from the movies into two 2hour movies like was originally planned it would've been right up there with Lord of the Rings. The story absolutely did not need three films - especially one about the Battle of the Five Armies.

Learning that "Hobbit Part 2" was split into two movies at basically the last minute, this fast edit flashback makes a lot of sense.

Thror was killed a few years before the Battle of Azanulbizar (called the Battle of Moria here) after unwisely entering Moria alone. In fact his death triggered the War of Dwarves and Orcs which culminated in this battle.
