In this video, we’re going to talk about what to do if you have terrible sugar cravings.

If you’re having sugar cravings and you’re not on keto, get on a healthy keto diet. This will make a HUGE difference in your cravings.

However, if you’re on keto and you’re still experiencing sugar cravings, we should take a deeper look at what might be happening.

When you’re in ketosis, your cravings for sugar naturally go down. So if they aren’t, this may mean that a medication you’re taking is causing sugar cravings or that you’re not fully in ketosis. Antibiotics, stress, and a lack of sleep can cause your blood sugars to skyrockets, which will make you crave more sugar.

First, you want to make sure that you’re keeping your carbs between 20 and 50 grams per day. If your carbs are higher than 50 grams, you might be kicking your body out of ketosis, which will cause a lot of sugar cravings.

Avoid all sugars. Instead, you should primarily be getting your carbs from berries and nuts.

Second, you want to cut down the frequency of your meals. The more often you eat, the more you’re going to experience insulin spikes, which can cause sugar cravings.

Finally, you want to get plenty of vegetables in your diet. Vegetables will help give you the nutrients you need to fight off sugar cravings.

Additionally, you want to do intermittent fasting. This will help fight off all cravings by keeping insulin levels low.

"Eating makes you hungry"...I can attest to that. I never was a breakfast eater but if, on rare occasion, I would eat breakfast I would then stay hungry the entire day! Whereas, if I had not eaten breakfast, I could go all day without eating or getting hungry.

Thank you, Dr. Berg, for all of these videos, and your time and care! I started KETO and following your advice a year and a half ago. I suffered horrible issues (terrible mood swings, sometimes not knowing who I was, the worst sleeping patterns, cramps, anxiety, hair loss, saggy skin on my upper thigh, and the list goes on) due to what I thought was premenopause, but really it was because I was addicted to sugars. I did a cold turkey break from sugar and now I’m just a different person! Almost all these symptoms are GONE. I would even say that I’m aging in reverse! New hair growth daily, with my white hairs disappearing, stable mood, able to meditate for an hour or longer, muscles in my legs visible, I sleep like a baby, and more! To celebrate my health I’m going on a 10 mile hike for the new year! God bless you, Dr. Berg!

I'm a food addict. I continued to have sugar cravings on keto no matter how low I took my carbs, even after a couple of years and being in ketosis and losing weight. I've gone carnivore for 30 days as an elimination diet. The cravings aren't completely gone, but I am seeing a difference. Sometimes addiction is just powerful.

On Christmas Day I ate a very big meal full of delicious pork dishes and as dessert I had keto brownie. After that I did fasting for a few days. Everybody gains weight on Holidays but guess who lost weight on Christmas? Yes, that's me! And I will do the same thing after New Year's meal! Because I realised how important and powerful fasting is! I'm so lucky and grateful that I found your channel in September and that I lost 15 kg with your help! People judged me a lot during my weight loss journey and told me that I was wrong but I never gave up on healthy keto! And now I'm happier, slimmer and healthier! Fasting and Keto are my lifestyle. Thank you a lot and Happy New Year!💖💖💖

During a fast, I drink sparkling water when available. This helps when I do the 16-hour fast, 8-hour eating window. Taking a pinch of salt also helps when you crave food while on a fast.

Doctor berg you're a lifesaver and your videos are life saving. I regret that initially in the beginning I used to ignore your videos but fortunately I realised that it was the worst mistake I ever made in my life considering that I used to be 95 kgs as a result of eating frequently high sugar rich food like ice creams, sweets along with refined carbs like chips, pizza, burgers, bread etc because I used to know absolutely nothing about insulin resistance but after watching your life saving videos i started following keto completely cut sugar and took 50g carbs along with IF then started exercising as a result I lost 15 kgs right now I'm 80 kgs feeling very healthy along with improved mental cognition

Just FYI - I did OMAD almost 20 years ago without doing Keto and lost about 15 pounds in a month. I was not overweight, just want to lose a few pounds. I think it’ll work as long as we’re not overeating anything.

It is all in my head. Full or financial stress and poor sleep. Sugar cravings like crazy.

This is true. I'm a huge carb fan, I can't stand protein of any sort. Keto was so hard for me to get going because the carb cravings were so outta control. I decided I just needed to give myself few days of serious self control and I knew the cravings would just go away. Well after battling on and off for a week or so I finally got a handle on it and not only did the cravings go away, so did the hunger

Thank you so much for this. I was on keto for a while until I had a very bad car accident. I got a very bad right shoulder injury. I couldn't sleep well. It was difficult to prepare meal for myself with one arm. I guess it was a mixture of injury, not getting enough sleep and not being able to eat keto meals that kicked me out of the diet. I think I had lost 20lbs in 6 months. Unfortunately I think I gained it all back because I am not eating very poorly. Watching this video gives me strength to start again. I don't want to be blind due to diabetes or other health problems. Prevention is better than trying to fix the issue.

What helped my cravings when I started Keto was eating green olives. The salty really helped kick cravings.

I can be in ketosis for quite some time and still crave sweets. For me, it’s all emotional/psychological. I tend to romanticize sugar and candy.

If I experience what you mentioned (after an injury or stress), I have been assuming that if I crave sugar (very rare) it is because it was previously my automatic stress comfort mechanism. Eating keto has made me very aware of how I react to stress. But it’s good to know that my meds might be contributing as well.

I always think of sugar as an enemy to my body, especially junk food.

Gained 10kg taking paxil, lost 3kg doing keto so far. The sugar cravings on anti-depressants are really bad. Cacao powder and cream helps.

I did strict keto for 7 weeks, stayed within my 20 grams of carbs, got the proper rest, ate fats, fasted for 18-20 hrs a day, only took Sudafed and never once stopped craving sugar and breads. So, for someone like me, what is the answer?
