very much discussed issue, in Aus cant find any Castrol a5/b5 (or LL)
so the oil to use is the reputable Penrite 5w-30 which is A5/B5 certified.
I'm happy with this one, DL I view engine oil changes almost as a blood transfusion.
indeed important to choose the right one. Good choice makes sense Re: temperature.
Our temp range over the year is from 5-40 deg celsius in the Blue Mnts.(xc60 D5 awd)

I use Castrol Edge 0W-40 on the P3’s and my P2 S60R. Nothing but love for this oil!

I use Liqui Moly Top Tec 4200 5W30. I bought it over Castrol because it was better value for money. Cost less per litre. I am at 420, 000km. Still runs like a champ!

General rule of thumb I use is cheaper oil will need changing more frequently. You can get more miles out of high quality oil like Castrol.
I use mannol oils but change every year or 6k whatever comes first

Frankly speaking we call a Castrol oil sh*t in Poland ;)

It is recommended that you also change the aluminium washer on the drain plug

V70 D5 Twin Turbo Polestar tuned. I use a good quality 5w30 A5B5 every 6k miles. More choice and is cheaper. We just don't see the temps in the UK for a 0w30 which is mainly for very cold climates and fuel economy being that there is less friction. 5w30 apparently causes less engine wear as it tends to persist on surfaces compared to a thinner 0w. The nonsense that it will get round the engine quicker whilst technically true is just a matter of milliseconds difference. Of course if I still lived in Finland then there is an argument for a thinner oil for sure.

18k service intervals are a joke. I wouldn't even let an air filter go that long let alone oil. My old V70 D5 P2 was sold at 200k miles and is still going strong. That had 6k oil changes its entire life and apart from maintenance items and the common core plug issue, it had zero problems its entire life.

I also use Castrol Edge 0w30 here in Portugal. Always the recommended oil and other fluids.

Yes, adhere to manufacturer specification when it comes to engine oils, however with brands, there are differences and I'll delve into that soon. For the five cylinder Volvo diesel, ACEA A5/B5 and viscosity of 5W-30 is perfect.

Car manufacturers recommend a brand of engine oil for a number of reasons. Some manufacturers conduct their own inhouse tests to identify the best oil for their engines. Others invite oil companies to submit their test results and a few offer a supply contract in which they commit to buy a given volume of oil over a set period of time and in return for that they seek the lowest price.

Volume and pricing are very important to "manufacturing" oil companies, while some so-called oil companies are really blending their products which are purchased from manufacturing oil companies.

Now with regards to which brand is preferable? I know from my time working in the oil industry that the comany that's out testing oil forumlas in engines and have been doing so for many decades, will be the brand at the top of my list. There are only a few in this league and the best place to find them will be at the race track. That's where the real testing occurs, when engines are taken to the extreme of their performance capability. How does the engine oil protect those engines and what do oil test results reveal? Test results are usually focused on ware-metals that will be found in oil samples taken at the track. Also - does the oil affect power at the drive-wheels? Remember - race teams are really interested in anything that improves power output. What about cooling contributions? Yes, oil plays a role there as well.

After all this, I'm not recommending a brand nor will I reveal which company I worked for, for 35 years. If you do your research you will find a brand that will be at the top in performance terms. The chemists and engineers in their research centres make sure of it.

A few last comments:
"Full" synthetic oils (PAO base stocks) don't need to be changed as often as mineral oils.
I do not recommend using mineral or semi synthetic oils in anything. I use full synthetics even in my water pumps.
The condition of used oil should still comply with specification at the time of change, so don't push your luck.
If the mnaufacturer specifies 15, 000 kilometre intervals, don't go past 20, 000.
There is extra duration capacity built into high quality synthetic oils.
Always install a new oil filter with every oil change.

Here in malaysia, its not easy to find A5B5 oil as volvo and ford is not popular. So far i manage to find motul and amsoil. The amsoil signature series being superior.

I felt scammed by Castrol, since they don’t sell 0w20 oil in 5L cans anymore (in Holland). Because of this I need to buy 1L cans and they’re crazy expensive… 13, 50€ per liter, vs 44€ per 5L in the past. I changed to Total Vdrive 0w20 volvo spec oil and think it’s as good.

Mann is the original supplier to Volvo. I purchased a genuine Volvo oil filter for my S60 D5. On the top it had Mann stamped on it and the Mann part number. The only difference was there was a little Volvo stamp on the genuine one.
I also found that genuine Volvo 0w-30 A5/B5 was cheaper than Castrol at Eurocarparts.
It was £37 for a 4L and £11 for a single litre. Apparently it is Castrol Edge but in a Volvo bottle.

Wow that just hit me when you said it’s not legal to carry a folder in the UK. In the US with my concealed carry I have my Glock on me at all times to preserve life. Just wish y’all had an option like a blade to at least protect yourself. Anyway…

Personally for my t6 mobil 1 is fine. And I use the same Mann filter does the same thing as oem and save a few bucks.

@DriveLife…how long does it take you to reach 6k miles? Working much more from home (rather than commuting as much)…I’ll probably only clear 7-8k miles per year! So change oil on annual service only.

This oil has to be the most difficult oil to find readily available. I struggle every time I need to do an oil change.

The best oil I used was Ravenol. The car traveled the longest distance without adding oil on Ravenol.

Yes just that oil is the best and mostly recommended for volvo

I just changed my oil for the first time on my Volvo C70 D4, I decided to use all Volvo parts, ie air filter, Oil filter, and Volvo labeled oil, I assumed that buying Volvo branded oil and parts guarantees correct compatibility and quality ! Does anyone know who actually manufacture's Volvo oil ? I read on other comments on here Mann make the oil filters, what about air filters etc ? thanks.

Valvoline is volvo certified, have been using that oil for over 100k miles, engine very clean with no deposits. Its also very quite when the oil is fresh. But then again I am changing the oil every 6k miles religiously. Downside, its one of the most expensive oils.
