How To: Loosen and use hardened bags of cement

I had some old bags of concrete sitting around & wasn't sure if I could use them cause they seemed pretty solid. Here's what I learned.

Thanks. will try using my moisture effected bags instead of tossing. Good to recycle. Ive also seen that a fresh bag mixed into an old effected bag strengthens it.

I had this same problem with a slab I just poured. I ended up buying some fresh bags and mixing one fresh bag to two of the hardened bags. It's only been a day but seems to be setting up nicely.

I had bags that had chucks of hardened cement that I broke up and used to set posts. Those posts are weak and wobbly compared to the good bags that were still all powder. I went through about 10 bags of hardened cement before I finally got to the bags that were all powder and then I only realized I was sold bad bags.

I just mixed 2 80 pound sacks I bought a few months ago. I stored them in my shop on a bench. I put it in a tire to hold a pole. 24 hours later it was still like dough. I needed to move it. I rolled it out of the way and when I set it down it started breaking apart. I have pour slabs that I mixed from sacks as large as 3'x6'x6" and it was firm to the touch after a few years. I removed forms in 24 hours with no problems. I'm not sure what happened this time.

I had 11 bags of cement stored in my barn for 6 months. Some of them were partially hardened, not too much. I broke up the hardened blocks and used them to put up fence posts. After 3 days the cement hasn’t hardened as it should! Don’t waste your time. Buy new cement. It’s going to cost you a lot more work and time having to take out the old cement and redo the whole thing.

I have a pallet of white expensive cement for casting, stored in garage but with no heating or humidity control, it has hardened. I will try to hammer it lose with a wooden mallet once I get around to it. :)

Don't do this in real life. Concrete mix does go bad and wont set properly after sitting in storage for a while. It remains crumbly even after a few days of curing. Use it or lose it.
