Aesthetics wise, they both need an icon revamp imo.
Suppose you can always install some tho.

Debian also has the Whisker Menu (the thing on the Mint side), it's just that Debian gives you Xfce as it comes from the Xfce project. It's trivial to set it up as you would like, and, personally I wouldn't want the setup that Mint has, so the less opinionated one is a better starting point for me.

The only real differences you see are a theme and some icons ... oh, and all the proprietary non-free stuff that Mint encourages you to install.

btw. as a distro it all comes from Debian GNU/Linux, without Debian there is no "Mint."
