Thank you so much for these side by side comparisons. They are extremely helpful for people shopping Linux versions.

I don't know, maybe they added new features in the fxce. Because I have both cinnamon and xfce and they are very similar. Maybe its because this is a year old. But the newest version of xfce, you can change all the same stuff as cinnamon, colors, icons, styles, etc. And actually have more panel customization options, compared to cinnamon. Cinnamon has some benefits, but nothing that is going to be that noticeable. I like the slightly simpler menu layouts of the xfce though. As long as I can change the colors and icons and styles, that's all that matters to me.

Thank you great explanation. Can you tell me where I can find a full walkthrough that include install & updating. I'm a newbie that stuck at 1st install, smh.

I'm surprised about xfce. Zorin OS lite (xfce) on my system at idle uses around 900MB RAM (similar to Zorin OS core gnome 43 somehow)... Somehow even more than Cinnamon...

I've installed 21.1 Mate on a e6510 dell laptop with an I5-520m, 4g ram and 500g spin-up HD. I noticed Chrome plays havoc on the memory; with 4-5 tabs the memory usage screams to max usage and the system lock ups unless I act fast and close the tabs. I've heard of memory dump issues and some folks lower the default value from 60 to 20-30 with positive results. MS Edge is worse, and I don't use Firefox. Looking at your comparison, seems Xfce and Mate use approx. the same amount of memory. I've ordered 2 sticks of 4g memory for a total of 8g, other than that any recommendations? TIA

thanks! So in terms of resources mate and xfce are pretty much the same?

If you're a beginner I recommend making a clean full-auto installation of Linux Mint, don't do manual partitioning or you could end up with a slow system/epic fail 😅

stlll don't see why there are 3 versions. been using xfce for the low memory even though i have enough. and the thunar file manager. tried others file manager but i remember them being pretty annoying. like when windows developers in the name of simplicity take away or hide s*** use daily. so anyway watched 3 video on this and none of them say or show the difference. its all suface level comparisons which all come down to its all the same thing done 3 times over.

Cinnamon all the way. It’s not even worth saving the measly 200MB of RAM for a worse desktop.

The RAM usage check that all Linux reviewers seem to spend time on has to be the single most unnecessary and pointless part of any tech video.
What possible point is there to finding out which one uses a hundred MB less than the other when your system is barely useable unless you've got 8GB (if you're DB with Windows.)
