My Theory: Thanos needed all the stones to keep the plot moving forward and the movie interesting. The writers wanted him to have them all, so he needed them all.

My HC of why he needed all 6:

He needed the power stone to transfer power between all 6 infinity stones to make them work together to execute the entire thing. If he didn’t have this, he couldn’t snap.

He needed the space stone to make the snap happen across the entire universe. If he didn’t have the space stone it might’ve only worked in a certain range not really helping ALL life.

He needed the reality stone to actually turn the bodies to dust or else there would be corpses everywhere.

He needed the soul stone to effect their souls aswell so there aren’t ghosts everywhere or other problems.

He needed the time stone to make sure they all turn to dust at the same time and all the infinity stones do their jobs at the same time or else it would be random across time. Like somebody would lose their body but their souls would still be there and then vanish like 19 years later. Yk?

Finally, he needed the mind stone to snap away the specified amount of organisms, 50%.
