A funny thing happend with potatoes. The Hungarian nobles wanted commoners to start cultivating and eating them. But the pesants didn't like them cus they thought they were weird, foreign and hard to harvest. So the nobles made them reserved for just nobles as "royal foods" planted "royal potatoe crops" and then didn't guard them vary well. The peasants didnt take kindly to being told they weren't allowed to have something, and would "steal" the "royal potatoes". Really they got tricked into harvesting and eating them out of spit.

The tomato is native to South America, specifically to the region that today corresponds to Peru, Ecuador, and northern Chile.

The method in which it cause poisoning is called leaching that happened due to the common plate was made pewter. Also fun fact, Tomatoes are consider a type of nightshade which means it's related to the deadly plant called belladonna.

It was considered poisonus because the rest of the plant is poisonus.
People just thought the leaves and the stem were just like the fruit.

The videos implies that Italy had no acidic food in the past.

thats actually insane, like with how ingrained tomato is italy's culture u would think they used it for a 1000 years.. but its actually pretty recent!
same here in saudi arabia with the classic dish Kabsa, every single home knows it and eats it like its all we know.. only to know that tomato is just very recent in the cuisine of the country.
such a revolutionary little vege

And then modern italian throws a hissy fit when tomatoes are "wrongly" used as if italians have been using them for 3000 years

Not lead necessarily, but an alloy often used for dinnerware called pewter. The acidity in the tomatoes would cause a chemical reaction with the pewter which would mix with the tomatoes, poisoning those eating the tomatoes. I learned this in 6th grade back in 2008 during an episode of BrainPop.

Edit: old pewter had lead in it
