Mudkip is the BEST Starter in Pokemon Emerald Speedruns. Here’s why.

Ever wonder why Pokemon Emerald Speedrunners always pick Mudkip as their starter? The reason is exactly what you probably think. Gym matchups are easiest for Mudkip. But I thought it might be interesting to discuss alt routes for both Treecko and Torchic as well!

So, let me summarize:
-Treecko is too hard to speedrun with because it loses very much time on third gym battle
-Torchic loses time because it has to evolve before the first gym
-Mudkip destroys 1st and 3rd gyms without preparing very much, so it's the best for speedruns.

iv'e always loved using Mudkip as my starter in gen 3. i was a big fan of wooper and quagsire in gen 2, so to have a pokemon that gets the same water/ ground typing was a blessing

I thought he was the best because he learns water gun at like level 10 and can solo the rock gym. And he can learn ground moves which is good against the Electric gym. He can also solo the fire type gym. I’ve beaten at least 4-5 gyms with just mudkip

No brainer. Mudkip line has one weakness and is the games easy mode. Gets surf, ice beam, earthquake, and another filler move. That’s all you need.

My guess on why Mudkip is the best before watching the video: It outperforms Treeko (well, duh), gym matchups are easier and itgives your opponent Treeko which can be taken down quicker and more consistently than Mudkip - which is why you don't choose Torchic.

Generally I do think that Torchic is a decent choice too, though. More favorable matchups in the early to mid game provided you evolve it, but you'll have to rely on other mons lategame, which is probably where you lose a bunch of time as well.
