Maybe I am in the minority, but I really like the Gen 5 starters. Samurott is a samurai otter, Serperior an elegant snake/dragon and Emboar is just bacon cooking itself. Maybe they look kinda derpy, but I like em. Easy top 5

I actually considered Hisuian Decidueye being somewhat better than the original, especially when Hidden abilities and Tera comes to the pictures. Triple arrows is way better than spirirt shackle in general

The Paldean starters have such cool concepts and etymology. I don’t think they’re over-designed. People clown on Skeledirge’s weird looking fire, but it’s based on marigold petals that are commonly associated with dia de los muertos aka day of the dead. A dirge is a mournful song which fits well with its dead, ghostly typing and skeletal design. Birds do sometimes clean out the mouths of crocodiles and in an unused animation, you can see it clean Skeledirge’s teeth. The bird also plays music by pressing the “buttons” on Skeledirge’s upper jaw and having it turn into a microphone that Skeledirge uses is so incredibly clever.

I didn't really care about the black and white starters either....but they were pretty good in battle. Serperior's hidden ability is absolutely broken
