How Much Would It Cost To Build A PC As Powerful As The PS5? (2023 Edition)

It’s been well over 2 years since Sony released the PS5, and fans have been treated to wonderful experiences like Horizon Forbidden West since its launch that serve as a great showcase for the power of the new hardware.

But thanks to recent advancements in the consumer PC hardware space, owning a rig that’s comparable to the performance of PS5 has become a much more lucrative option than it was in the past.

We picked off-the-shelf brand new components to aggregate a 1:1 performance when compared with the PS5, and our total cost excluding software and peripherals came at around $770. It’s pretty cheap when you put in against our 2021 edition which cost around $1130, but the price gap is bound to get even lower as we progress deeper into this generation.

You lost me at 4060ti, the FP32 performance of a 4060ti is 114% greater than the PS5's GPU. The 5700xt on the other hand only has a 5% difference in comparison to the PS5 and would be a better match since the 4060ti way outperforms the PS5 GPU.

I don't come to these videos for the content. I come for the comments, because those are real people that ACTUALLY know what they're talking about lol. Two of my best gaming PCs were built off of commenters over the years.

Plus, keep in mind that these are US component prices. The US market is significantly cheaper when it comes to electronics to almost everywhere else in the world.

The comments are hilarious. PC gamers acting like snobs and forgetting why we play games in the first place. Fighting over which cards to use, who is superior, how consoles have no value and at the same time complain about bad ports, graphic cards and parts issues, my card is better, my case is better, my power supply is better 😂😂 its like watching children fight over a toy at walmart.

One thing to keep in mind is that a lot of games aren't optimized for PC, so you'll need better specs to get the same performance. Hopefully with Steam pushing the Steamdeck game companies will start investing in PC optimization.

The 4060ti might be underpowered as a gpu but it's a bit overkill compared to ps5's gpu

770$ is probably the cost of a single component from this video in my country

started with PC when I was a teen, and I was a meticulous one. As an adult with responsibilities, I prefer consoles now for optimization, price, early releases, exclusives, and time. I remember going home from work and I would troubleshoot things like RDR2 because it kept crashing every 10 minutes or Death Stranding and its anti-aliasing issues, which I fixed, but with trial and error, searching for solutions, fiddling both in game and NVIDIA settings, searching solutions on Reddit or Youtube. I'm through all that stress, and I'm enjoying my time with the PS5. Also allotting some money to different hobbies and time with the family. best decision I ever made.

I used to be a PC gamer exclusively way back when, but somewhere along the way, I started using consoles more and now use them exclusively. Will they ever match a custom-built PC in performance and power? No, but I'm ok with that. As mentioned in this comment section several times, the primary reason I like consoles is that the games I play are designed to play on them. When I was building gaming PCs, I was always concerned with my hardware being good enough to play games. That and upgrading became really expensive.

B450 chipset doesn’t support PCI-e 4.0, only 3.0. You’ve utterly gimped the drive to about half its speed and is bottlenecking the 8 lane PCI-E 4060.

For those who actually want a pc on part with a ps5 .
It costs 600 usd .
R5 5600 with rx 7600
If you can get a good deal on a 6700xt your getting way more performance .
Btw Amd makes the pc 5 chipz, the 6700(non xt) is basically a pc version of the pc gpu, but it can boost 10% faster .
If your willing to buy a used gpu, you can get a 6700xt /6750xt you can get them for 190-220 usd in the Us .

remember, it might be a little bit more expensive to build a gaming pc, but you are building a pc, so it's a multipurpose device, plus you get access to steam, epic store and gog which means, there is a huge library of games you could play and a lot of them are dirt cheap if you buy it with the right time...

you also get access to xbox games if you wanted too and you can also emulate any game you want... you cant play pokemon games on PS5, but you can on PC.

I will be honest with you. i lost you on the gpu . The cheapest 4060 on the market 399usd is almost as expensive as the ps5. You can get a new ps5 for 408usd .

Since this PC has no Blu-ray drive, it should be compared to the $400 PS5.

This video reminds me on the The Verge how to build a gaming pc video, in terms of the choices that they made for the components. Crazy enough that the comparision to the ps5 is lame for the fact that it comes ready to go out of the box with a controller and a BD drive and they were no where near the price point of a ps5.

Beginning of the video: PC makes more sense from financial perspective.
End of video: PC costs almost 50% more than PS5.

Because of the mass market adaptation of consoles and franchises that are exclusive to a given console (at least initially), many games are optimized to extract maximum performance from the respective console. This is similar in concept to an Apple computer having inferior components to a PC on paper but yet out-performing that PC in reality : there is a very tight coupling between software and hardware that much like Apple, consoles also enjoy.

This basically means it is very hard to compare "apples to apples" between PC and a given console just like it is hard to compare an Apple computer with a PC if you only look at the specs. Best way to compare I'd argue is to look at performance comparisons : analyze the resolution, frame rates, and approximate the graphical settings of games available on both PC and a given console and then figure out what it takes in terms of a PC that can achieve similar performance to the console with that given game.

Worst thing for me about pc gaming has been the updates and the having trouble shoot all the time with random issues for someone like me that gets out of work and just want to play a few games I ended up on my ps5 of Xbox series x and barely use my gaming pc. I have also found in fps games you run into so many cheaters.

You forgot the ease of jumping straight into a game on PS5, no error messages to deal with, no manually changing configuration files, no replacing dlls, comes with controller, cheaper games in general (when on sale compared to steam), less frequent and more stable OS updates(compared to windows),
