After 50+ years of work, I'd like to tell younger people...GET THE HELL OUT AS SOON AS YOU CAN! Your 9-5 job will just use and drain you until they can fire you for someone who will work for a few cents less.

People who say, "If i wasnt working i wouldn't know what to do with myself" are beyond me. If i was suddenly wealthy, i would quit working immediately and have enough hobbies and interests to occupy me for the rest of my life.

I love it when rich privileged people tell the poors how to be poor

They don’t want you to be able to leave for greener pastures, they want to own your time completely. Thus, they own you.

I’ve been coding for over 30 years. I’m exhausted. I could stare at a wall for the rest of my days and be content.

The tragic part is, a lot of people die soon after retiring. Possibly because they actually worked them selves to death, but also work stabilized them. Although, what they're writing is like stuff from a dystopian satire or something.

Why do these articles never tell health care workers, construction, restaurant workers, dog groomers, etc to never retire?

The corporate culture is past the point of being toxic….it is absolutely rotten. We owe the employers nothing more than exactly what we are paid to do, nothing more.

The corporate culture is a prison and Gen Z, millennial, or Gen X wants it once unplugged from matrix.

Almost makes me think getting fired is a blessing.

Many years ago, my dad used to tell me that working hard in school and work will lead to rewarding outcomes in my future. Now, he's telling me to have a goal towards early retirement and to live a modest lifestyle. He said these phrases: "I'd rather sit at home on my sofa watching TV than to commute to the office in a Mercedes.", "Health is more important than wealth. You cannot enjoy wealth without health."

I got an engineering degree but wish I would have just kept working construction and started my own business.
If you are capable of building a house, save enough money to build yourself a new primary residence. Live in it 2 of 5 years and qualify for the section 121 capital gains tax exemption on sale of your primary residence. ($250k single, $500k married)
If you can build a house live in it 2 years while build the next one, then move into the new one and sell the last one. You can make up to $500k tax free profit every 2 years (depending on state tax law) that is the equivalent of making $390k (gross) annually as a W2 employee...
I'm saving to build my first house this next summer.
If it works out how I hope, the next one will start the summer after I move into the first one.
Could generate $750k-$1m in wealth in 3-4 years.

This retiree moved 2500 miles, bought a small cottage in the mountains, and am now mortgage and debt free. I bike, hike, take day trips, walk my dog, work on my hobbies, attend monthly classic movie days, attend free and music concerts and grow a garden. I do my own yard work.
I don't have time to go back to the corporate world. 😁😁

When I got my first 9-5 in my twenties, my first goal was to retire early. That was my motivation for showing up. I was never driven or ambitious about my work, though I did take advantage of overtime when available. I'm retired in my forties.

The definition of retirement is not that you don’t work…It’s that you work on your own terms.

Rich people don’t feel the need to retire because they live like they’re retired their entire life. They can afford to skip days at the office they own, go golfing, take long luxurious vacations, travel anywhere they want. To the rest of us we likely can never experience most of that but if we can it’ll only be after retiring.

My dearest young people,
I’m an aging tail-end Gen-X’er. I swallowed the “go to college, get a house, have a bunch of kids” bait hook, line, and sinker. Hell, probably even the bobber, too.
First, I want to apologize. I’m sorry I was part of a system that perpetuated debt slavery by dangling the carrot of dreams. I didn’t how wrong I was and I didn’t know there was an alternative.

I’m over 30 years along into working; into being part of the system. And, here’s what I’ve learned:

I didn’t want this. I didn’t sign up for this. Worst of all, I’m sorry we signed YOU up for this because now I know there are alternatives.

If I could offer you what I’ve learned for free, it’s this:

You don’t need a big a house. You probably won’t even like it all that much. The bills associated with are soul crushing.
Honestly, I wish I’d just saved my money, bought myself a mountain top, built a tiny home, and taken in an old stray dog.

You have opportunities to do that. You can buy solar and wind and whatever else.
Please, for the love of God, don’t fall for the hustle culture trap. Please get out of this system. Save yourself some money, buy a small patch somewhere, live in a nice RV or build a tiny home. Work remotely and escape to the interior by eschewing the immobile house for the motor home (they cost less and are just as nice).

RETIRE. For the love of whatever gods may be, retire. EARLY. In your 40s or 50s. Maybe even sooner if you can.

There’s nothing after this life. This is all we get. Go enjoy yours, instead of dying from radiation poisoning from decades of fluorescent light exposure in an office, in debt, and trudging, just waiting on the rest death offers.

Sincerely,
A prisoner of the capitalist system.

There are a million ways to stay busy and feel fulfilled that don't require nine to five drudgery. What a crock.
