How long do PANIC ATTACKS last?

Although the intense part of a panic attack only lasts for around 5-15 minutes, the residual after effects can last for hours. And it’s possible to get triggered again by a thought, an event or feeling, so the whole process can happen all over again.

During this video I use a rock and some water to explain how a panic attack feels intense at first followed by ever decreasing ripples of sensations.

Panic attacks are sometimes so intense that they feel like a heart attack. It’s always a good idea to get a diagnosis from a health professional and not rely solely on self-diagnosis. But being aware of your symptoms and triggers will help you to recognise the sensations in your body.

Thank you SO much for the explanation. I've always heard how the panic attack usually lasts for a short time, and I've felt scared and confused that my symptoms often don't go away even after an hour or even longer. But with your explanation, now it all makes sense. It wasn't that the panic attack itself was lasting forver for me but I was just having those afterwards effect and I was making them last even longer by feeling anxious and scared about it.

This is such useful information. Although I've not experienced a panic attack myself, I've been with someone who has and this helps me relate to what they are experiencing.

I have been dealing with anxiety and panic attacks for 5 years, the first 2 years was the most difficult, i stopped driving, almost never left the house, terrible digestive problems and then a friend suggested I get a book float through panic by Dr Claire Weekes, it changed my life. I still experience anxiety attacks but I don't fear them so much anymore. I have just realized that my stomach problems now is the only thing that still causes me anxiety. The key for me was not to fear the physical sensations.

I had one yesterday and I feel something still today, the very weird thing is that Yesterday it was like dreaming, like I was not in the reality, and the main wave made the time literally repeat, I was repeating the same minut like 15 times, and that scared me cuz i was on the road with an electric scooter, i just remember i was like in a dream repeating the same 100m with the scooter, then almost crashed, (i think i literally lost consciousness in that moment ), then i go to the side of the road, put down the thing, i lay down and start shaking, and from then get home like 1h walk through the city feeling everything a dream and sometimes the time blocks, i was feeling like other people weren't real, that was very very weird, idk what it was, i searched and it seems like a panic attack, but has some differences... BTW, when i was in the big wave, I was always thinking "I will wake up right now like laying down in the street with ambulances or something like that" it was very very weird the fact that I was like dreaming, and the time was doing weird stuff, that was the main reason it felt not real, but it was real cuz i was writing to my friends group xd

Thank you so much for taking the time to explain how Panic Attacks works. I am a big advocate of the Generation Calm meditations. To have an understanding of the Panic Attack and how the body works is most helpful and gives context to the meditations. 🧘‍♂️

I have only had a few intense panic attacks since it all started a year and a half ago when I was 16 but the after-effects where you still have similar feelings but not as intense haven't really gone away since I only feel normal when I'm in my house and I haven't really gone out much. at one point I was in my house for months but as of a few days ago I've just been facing it and going out because if I do anything else but face it head-on I won't get rid of it or at least minimize it. I just started therapy so I'm on the right path. Great Explanation also in this video.

My panic attacks last a very long time. I wish there was a helpful video I can watch that will actually work to help me calm down and get rid of them. I know there's got to be some kind of method out there or something because they are terrible. I would enjoy watching a video that can actually help me. I see a therapist I actually have two of them I do enjoy talking to that and it feels good getting stuff off my chest but it still doesn't help when I get these long-lasting panic attacks. Sometimes I guess it would be nice just to call someone that has the same problems that you can actually talk to right away when they're happening. It sucks kind of being a solo person and not having a lot of people around you to help you out

Hi I’ve appreciated your video. Made me look at it completely different. Your example was really great. I think I might be suffering the ripples. I had a major panic attack for like 4-5 hours about a week ago. I’ve had panic attacks my whole life but never had a panic attack hangover. I’ve been having one the brain fog has almost all gone away but the fatigue and anxious feeling is still here? Anyone have any similar experience ?

Due to multiple tensions happening in my life I think I suffered a panic attach. I'm having shortness of breath since 2 months and it's scary, but my oxygen levels are still perfectly normal.
I think my breathing has improved a bit but not completely. How long might it take to recover please tell me

I have had 2 pa's Your descriptions do not reflect my experience. Its not just decreasing ripples. It is an intense physical somatic experience that .lasts fo about 6 hours. Then, ripple effects will commence and go on for another hours or so.
