Should I cut this strap on my #boxing gloves? 👁👈🚫

Added in the 1970's to prevent eye pokes and thumb injuries, some people snip this strap for more freedom with the hands.

Another reason for that strap is also for safty but during combat, back in the days wasn't rare to blind your opponent's eye using your free thumb. it was a dirty boxing tactics

Also to avoid eye pokes, once when I was competing in a club vs club comp. My opponent had a faulty glove, and they got D’Q’d as they poked me in the eye and couldn’t see for about 5mins lol

It never was intended to protect your thumb although it did end up that way its main purpose was to prevent eye pokes like what happened to Sugar Ray Leonard.

I got the top boxer old school style boxing gloves a little while back without a thumb strap and a generally more opened up palm and it's done worlds for my style, allows me to be way more creative in big glove sparring and implement more techniques. Highly recommend though they weren't cheap

Broke my wrist using mma gloves because of my thumb getting caught and snapping back. Perfect boxers fracture. That fracture prevented me from shipping out to boot camp. Arguably a very lucky break.

I recommend cutting the strap. If you learn proper punching mechanics then your thumb is a non issue. But the big issue with the strap is it has been known to catch on peoples ears when they slip a punch and even tear the ear from the head. So idk I’d rather break my own thumb out of negligence vs cutting my sparring partner or opponent’s ear off his head.

I cut the strap to all my gloves it feels a lot more comfortable but I definitely didn’t realize it was for thumb safety I’ve never had any problems but ima be cautious with it thanks for the info🔥🔥

I definitely know what you’re talking about here boss, I noticed my gloves feel closed in when I use them but as they’ve gotten more used up over time I’m able to move my hands freely with them. I notice buds gloves also are always very fitted to his hand

I cut that little strap so I can hold a rubber band for better resistance.

Motorcycle gloves sometimes have the same thing but it connects to the pinkies, and sometimes tbe ring finger too.

Your right but it was also added because most fighters would play dirty and poke their opponents in the eyes

The only people who cut the straps are beginners. Those professional boxers will give you a beating if you cut their thumb strap because at that point all their gloves cost about $100-400 and some aren't even just straps, some gloves like Twins has an entire leather piece connecting the thumb

I cut the straps on a pair of gloves I have. Wouldn’t do it to all my gloves, but it’s cool to experiment with.
