In the Victorian era they used to add black to brightly colored paints and dyes as well. They called it “saddening” colors.

I love making “Frankenpolishes”! And not just by adding black and white. If I have a pink but need a corally color, I’ll add some orange. Or add some purple and white to blue and get a periwinkle. Color theory is helpful tho; otherwise you can end up with a lot of browns.

You can sometimes find silicone mats at dollar stores for baking, protection under glue guns, or sometimes as a grip to help open jars. Doesn't have to be nail specific.

A tip for darkening pinks; instead of using black, use a purple if you want a less drastic change. great vid, it’s really useful x

Perfect to use those polishes that don't suit my skin tone. I'll give it a go 😊

Having students mix yellow and black is one of my favorite things do to when I teach color theory! That khaki green always blows everyone's mind, I love it!

Speaking of re-using orange wood sticks, I even go a step further by just scraping the dried up polish off with the edge of an old metal nail file. Works great since the dried polish flakes off easily so you can use the same stick forever basically 🤷‍♀️

I'm a little late, but if you want a dark yellow, instead of black, use brown :)
learned this the long and hard way by many painting mistakes haha

Omg yes! Why have I never thought of this before?? I love doing ombre nail looks where every nail is a lighter/darker shade than the one before it, but sometimes I don't have colors that go together (like I have 5 different blue polishes but their tone isn't the same). With this method, I can just keep adding more dots of white/black to get a closer-toned ombre!

This is a good idea for events like weddings where you don't want to buy a color you'll never wear again but you have to match your dress/tie.

One of my favorite things to do is make "bottom of the bottle" polishes with the remnants of two or more polishes. It's fun to experiment and have all new shades!

Duct tape also works amazing as a mixing surface, and once the polish dries it peels so easily and the asmr is chefs kiss lol

Kelli saying "I feel like I don't like eggnog but I also can't remember what it tastes like" is the most accurate thing

I’m actually so excited to use this just to make new colors even tho I don’t tend to care too much about what season I wear which color - this just feels like a fun way to add new colors to my collection without buying new colors!

I've been doing this for years. Back in the day when I first started doing my nails some 40 years ago I was always mixing polishes together to make new colors. I love that I don't have to work so hard at it now...lol! 😊
