On the other hand, there's the kids' trick: "If you want a kitten, start by asking for a pony."

When he said, "everyone refused." I thought everyone refused to drive carefully.

Another trick you can use: When asking for something, start with giving them a suggestion that’s greater than what you want, then slowly get to where you want. This will increase their changes of saying yes. This can be used for bargains as well

i feel like the “door in the face” technique is actually better, because it makes people feel like they’re doing less, when they’re doing exactly what you wanted.

"can you help me with my homework?"
"can you let me copy your homework?"
"can you do my homework?"

Citizens: sure!
US government: can I tax you at 40%?
Citizens: sure!

I was always told to start big because it anchors the more unreasonable idea in their head, and makes the second request seem extremely trivial by comparison.

I asked my friend to go steal 1 dollar from a guy and give me 10%.

2 weeks later I asked my friend to go rob a bank and give me 100%. He didn't make it.

Can confirm this works. I started small asking a girl if she could stand being in my presence for just five seconds, and five years later she has a restraining order on me!

“Can you hand me the remote?”
“Sure”
“Alright now listen up, we’re robbing the bank later tonight, I’m gonna need you to be here at 7PM exactly with a ski mask, and a capable firearm, if you aren’t here at precisely 7, we WILL hunt you down.”

Psychologists call it "the foot in the door effect", we call it the "federal government".

The world will burn. But for now, I'll start small.

A similar trick we do is higher risk, higher reward. We offer something at an unreasonable price, then offer an "exception" and lower the price for that person

Or you could do the opposite... Start big then go small, for example: say you really wanted an iPhone... First ask for an Apple Mac and then when the refuse, because that's a massive request, ask for the phone instead because then in contrast it's a smaller request. Idk if I'm just being a dumb ass but oh well.

i wouldn’t have crashed my car if all those “drive carefully” signs weren’t distracting me

My guess is the satisfaction we feel from giving someone what they want makes us want to do it again. Someone asks you to do something and you do it for them, you feel good. You feel helpful. Important. Like you matter. Like you can do things. Like what you do has an impact. Two weeks and that feeling starts to subside… but then! Out of nowhere! A chance to get that feeling back? To make even MORE of a difference this time? Oh that’s a great feeling.

"Can I borrow a tent?"
"Can I crash on your couch?"
"Can you sign your house over to me?"

Works every time.
