In 2014, while attending Gallaudet University in DC, I got an internship with House Rep. Mark Takano, a newbie at the time, and a child of Japanese Americans forced into CA concentration camps in WWII, who is gay, and a former public school teacher in Riverside, where he met with Deaf families as well as many minorities, and saw the problems kids were having there to be able to be educated enough to obtain a job.

The staffers were terrible!

They were cocky, and arrogant 20 to 30 year olds who had went straight from high school to college to intern to paid staffer, never having held a typical job back home, and never intending to.

They would go to lunch someplace and come back saying things like “oh i felt so bad for the waitress. I would never want to do that job.”

There was one staffer who said he was going to run for Congress because he felt he knew more than any Congressman as he did all the real work. (He lost.)

This was when the public said no more raises, but I saw the staff saying they were going to ask Takano’s Russian angry head of staff for a raise. The man came back crying. Not suprised, that staffer liked to control, yell, and threaten interns.

The STAFFERS terminated me early not due to being bad but because when I took a newspaper into the Representative’s office I didn’t know where I was to put it, they set me up to fail as the staff told me to take it in. So I asked the NOT busy Congressman where he wanted it, and he told me to put it on his desk and asked me a question, which I answered and suddenly the staffer barged in and pulled me away with his jaw dropped. They wanted a non speaking Deaf slave, not someone who could speak….the STAFFERS were who were allowed to speak…constantly, all day long, yacking away, and I was busy working.

I was there when he did a radio town hall. Three staffers were running it at their desks. When it was done one of the young white women said “oh that was close! A woman called to talk about abortion, and I nearly let her in, but she said ‘I know he will not be pro choice, he is a man’ So I put her on eternally hold.” See if staff do not want you to make him embarrassed or hurt feelings or challenged in any way, they will not let you talk. But it isn’t that simple…because he wasn’t a baby, he could have told her he was pro choice, it is on his website.

No, if a 20 year old paid staff in Congress decides you are not good enough to HER standards, she will put you on the phone list to NEVER get to talk to your representatives!! Got it?

I saw them happily letting in to speak to the Congressman a guy who didn’t even remember his first name right, a really sleazy gay man, who is a paid lobbyist. I never saw one constituent visit, but then again, they likely will not be seeing him. You see why?

Going back to what happened to me, I told the staffer immediately that I didn’t know where to place his paper, she had not told me where, so I stood there confused and made the logical decision to ASK not assume and not go back out to ask her, and that HE talked to ME. She said “well he has a lot to learn.” Yeah, this young 20 something white chick said she knew more than the Congressman and that he was a newbie but she had worked for other congressmen before him so she knew more than him!! But she had never even been a burger flipper in high school, no jobs outside of Congress, she felt superior to HIM!!

so skip to months later, same summer, and I saw ALL the liberal Staffers of ALL the Congress members went on strike, because they wanted more pay…after we said as the People to freeze salaries for Congress including staff! They said while on strike that staffers hold the power, and that without them, nothing can be passed or done.

And that is when as a government minor I realized that hired staff wield too much power over the elected folks we chose to represent us.

Staff need fired.

Staff need put in their place.

Staff need replaced with new people across the board.

Staff need to be hired not from DC but who live in their hometown and were raised there and have held at least one regular type of job, and be over age 28.

I mean this from the bottom of my heart, we are unsafe as a country with the power ignorant young 20 somethings are using to hold America hostage….and in an emergency like another 9-11 we are doomed.

(PS: they are overpaid.)
