SHIPMENT ON CUSTOMS HOLD

When the shipper or consignee gets a message from CBP
That their shipment is on Customs Hold
It is bad news!

A shipment on hold could mean that
Either some info is missing in the shipping docs
Or the info provided is wrong
Or some duties/taxes have not been paid
Or the cargo has been selected for CBP Exams

When shipment is on hold for CBP Exams
It is usually more serious
Cargo can take long before getting released
At additional costs for the shipper or consignee

For selecting cargo for exams, Customs and Border Protection (CBP)
has its own algorithm
That is unknown to anybody except CBP
It selects specific shipments to be examined
For illegal cargo or misdeclaration

If the CBP’s algorithm to select shipments for exams
Were known to anybody outside CBP
Smugglers and terrorists would be able to avoid exams
