Ahoy, Here in Akron Ohio USA we have sporadic electricity blackouts especially during thunderstorms. So I always shutdown my PCs when a storm is coming. Recently that happened but Windows started updating, no way to stop. So I held my breath and at 78% the power failed as usual. After trying every trick I spent the next day reinstalling Windows. Such is life with Windows "can't stop the upadate" updates. Thanks for the interesting examination of that problem. Cheers, daveyb

9:17 also you could try a in-place repair and that would reinstall all the system files.

Ugggh, this is a nightmare for any technician to have to deal with. Unfortunately, this is bound to happen when computer owners don't have patience when the computer is updating and shut it down prematurely.

2023 And Windows still haven't find a simple way to run an emergency boot OS to check and fix files using online assistance the same way Steam would do when it checks for file corruption around games...The emergency OS is something that get config on first time installing Windows just to make sure the basic drivers are all set right. Linux does offer this for extreme trouble shooting using a simple USB but at this point it should be something imbedded on the system itself.

I did a few months back, the update froze for a few hours so I decided to try to restart the PC - and as a result had to purchase a new PC as it corrupted the PC beyond repair. My BIOS (UEFI) became corrupted and all repair options I've tried to fix the BIOS failed. I couldn't even access the BIOS. All I had was a screen that said "Acer" and several beeps. Dangerous to shut down the PC during an update. Good video.

Not sure what happens on 11, but Win 10 I have shut down during an update and had no issue's at all, and I have also shutdown during an update and had to reformat/reinstall the entire drive. It can easily brick your system, and some updates can take several hours to complete, depending on MANY things at the time of updating. It's best to let it do it's thing in the background and not mess with it during updates. It can save a lot of headache later.

I disagree with the thing of switching the computer off while the updates are being installed in it. This act could damage the software, even attack the microprocessor. Updates are like electronic tools and a variety of features packed into the software. There are some potential problems that are solved when updates are allowed to be completely downloaded.

I did it once after leaving Windows 10 to update overnight. It appeared to have got stuck, which is why I left it so long before turning off. Thankfully no disaster on that occasion.

UPDATES turn up at inconvenient moments, like I am just shutting down to leave. Microsoft presumes I will always be here and have time to see whatever they require DONE, But not only that, I am expected to do it WHEN they require it. Whose PC is it? Did I not pay for it? They are authoritarian DICTATORS. I often pull the plug on my PC in such occasions - it still works - but has me ever more thinking about alternative systems, perhaps Linux.

I did the same thing with a upgrade to Fedora 32 back then, it killed most things, including the display driver and Python, and since dnf requires Python, you have to reinstall the whole system.

There are rumors about Windows 12. Please check to see if those rumors are true. Windows 11 is barely 2 years old so how come they leaked Windows 12?

How long can it take? The window update? More than an hour?

I would try System Restore first. I usually make sure I've got some restore points should the worst happen.

Often wondered what would happen thanks for the heads up Brian. Now I would run the DISM commands - Restore health for example - after the fix sooner than a sfc scannow??

The easiest way to repair windows is, 1:backup 2:format 3:reinstall windows mush quicker in the long run.

I have to be honest, I've done this at least 20 times over the years and I never had a issue. Maybe because of the way I did it.
When I caught, yes caught (because I have automatic updates disabled) Windows updating itself I would just hold the power
button until it shut itself off. Then I would wait a minute or two, then press the power button and turn it on. Maybe I've been
lucky or something, I don't know, but Windows would just start up like normal and I've never had a problem or issue.
