Could this rusty hanger kill you? #climbing #breaktest

These plated steel hangers were left on the Pacific coast for the last 4 years. Unsurprisingly, they didn't hold up too well. Even thought the outer layers were peeling right off, we were surprised by how strong they still were. The metal inside was still pretty good and they broke in the low 20 kN range. Since we can never see the inside of a hanger without breaking it, its always best practice to replace rusty bolts and hangers with something that will hold up better. Do you want to trust your life to something that just MIGHT be strong enough?

Hardware that looks bad before it performs bad seems ideal to me.

Thanks man. Can't tell you how many wobbly, rusty anchors I've seen on routes. Not even 2 anchor points half the time 😭

Salt / Ocean Air and humidity is really hard on metals and is extra corrosive - seems like a better idea for these scenarios is planned replacement at reasonable intervals of time or whenever something begins looking too sketchy to feel good about. Interesting results on those tests. Excellent video.

Honestly it's kind of hard to avoid the rust in the rust belt.

Steel will deform and bend before they die, stainless won't it'll go from looking perfect to dead.
