COOKING BASICS | The FIRST thing you need to learn

Where to start? I've got you covered! We chat about the first thing you need to have in hand to be successful in the kitchen - a sharp chefs knife! How to pick one out, how to hold it, how to use it, and I even demo those skills by dicing and slicing a bell pepper.

RECAP:

You DO NOT need to spend a fortune on a chef's knife, however making a good investment will last you for YEARS. My first chef knife is linked below, and I still have it and use 10 years later. It cost me around $100 (which is about the normal price for a good one), but just sharpen what you have at home until buying a better one fits into your budget!

MAKE SURE YOUR KNIFE IS SHARP! I promise this will make things way easier. I will create and link a video of how to sharpen down the road.

PRACTICE! It's the only way you will become comfortable with the chef's knife. Every time you make dinner, practice your skills on those vegetables or fruit. I promise you will get there!

my mom has unfortunately fallen into an ed and forces herself to only eat a bread a day. I am very worried about her, but now she doesn't cook for me nor my little brother anymore either. I hope I will be able to cook for him.

Five months later: I actually did get pretty decent at cooking! I struggled quite a bit but now I have my groceries I shop every week and my few meals I prepare. It has settled, fun to me even! Thank you for the loving comments, it does get better. My mother is also doing big steps towards recovery. I wish everyone the best. Thank you.

I have ZERO cooking experience.

A blind monkey could cook better than me.

I’m excited to get started.

Thank you, in advance!

Omg yes. Finally, a clear and concise video for beginners that just gets to the basics without 30 minutes of unrelated backstories and unneeded explanations! You definitely need more subs!!

I like to watch your videos but the music is a bit loud in the background and it is distracting. Otherwise I would choose your videos over the others because you are very simple and clear in your explanations

I am learning to cook for the first time really. It seemed very daunting to me because I grew up in neglect and I never really saw how a lot of things should be done. But I am 30 now and I’m ready and confident to just try and learn things, failures are just learning experiences (Also something great I’ve learned) 🙂 I’m really grateful to find you, this is easy to understand. I like your teaching style. Looking forward to watching your other videos and seeing your new videos as they come in. Thank you for this ❤️

Here is why COOKING is SO IMPORTANT:
1. Health, especially when your doctor gives a strict diet
2. Next time you go to the supermarket you will realise that 95% of the content is unhealthy/fast food
3. Fun cooking
4. Way to socialize with others
5. Part of spending time in a relationship
6. Saving money
7. Longer life if you learn to cook healthy
8. For those who think it's waste of time: audiobooks, treat it as a mindfullness exercise etc.
9. Planning your meals- mo more what should I eat?

I’m so thankful I’ve found you! My mom was an *amazing* cook, but she passed when I was 20, before I ever took a real interest to learn.
Thank you for breaking things down (no pun intended) for someone like me who literally knows nothing about cooking. I love how detail oriented you are in your teaching— that’s exactly what I’ve been looking for and how I learn best! Looking forward to watching more of your videos on this journey!

Thank you! My parents think my passion for culinary and cookings is stupid and realistic and forced me to go a different path. This is helping me learn and hopefully go to culinary school

She gets right to the point, and she’s really pretty. I could watch her cook all day. She makes it easy for me to understand, because I’m a hands-on kind of learner.

My daughter and I want to learn how to cook and this already has me looking forward to it. I've cut up bell peppers for fajitas and now see how much better and easier it would be.

Thanks for the basics of knife and cutting demonstration. This is really helpful for me because I'm just starting to learn to cook

SIDE NOTE: The background music is not the sole purpose of the video.

Great job, Lorin!
