No, we cannot even say that free will doesn't exist in a materialistic universe. You would have to have comprehensive understanding of the systems of the universe to say such a thing.

Again, how is this even considered intellectual?

Alex must deny free will because of his metaphysics, I.e., an accidental world operating as a mindless and purposeless machine reducible to the material. But, and this is a very BIG BUT, this is not how he actually lives his daily life. Hence, he lets his abstract metaphysics dictate on what he thinks, but lives his life involving the actual practice of free will but denying it exists mentally. Make that make sense.

I get what Ben is saying, but a white lie is only that at the end of the day. Ofcourse religion has created a form of structure from making people fear God. That doesn’t neccessarily mean that it’s true just because it’s beneficial for a society to thrive.
