About Cal Newport:
Cal Newport is a computer science professor at Georgetown University. In addition to his academic research, he writes about the intersection of digital technology and culture. Cal's particularly interested in our struggle to deploy these tools in ways that support instead of subvert the things we care about in both our personal and professional lives.

Cal is a New York Times bestselling author of seven books, including, most recently, A World Without Email, Digital Minimalism, and Deep Work. He's also the creator of The Time-Block Planner.

Cal, love your content. I prefer short videos like this over the full podcast episodes. The main feedback I get from people I share your channel with are that the videos are too long. Thanks and keep up the good work!

You’re in a war zone. You’ve almost certainly got PTSD. It’s not just about dopamine sickness but the real nightmare unfolding near you. Be incredibly kind to yourself.

Make your bed, clean your room… start there… the rest will be figured out as you go along. The world is filled with problems to fix but we need small wins to get us started and headed in the direction we should go. 😂 heard a lobster guy say that one time 😂😂

Cal—ironically the more I listen to you, the more you are convincing me that value comes first.

You are saying it yourself—you value efficaciousness, so you’ve built an approach that starts with 3-4 basic disciplines to build it—body (exercise), mind (reading), heart (kindness), soul (prayer for the monk). Eventually your approach revisits values to build more depth that is only attainable with the initial entering (silent) value of efficaciousness—or baseline discipline for baseline efficaciousness.

The only difference between you and the monk is one is rooted in “depth” for the sake of the current life, and the other is rooted in “depth” for the sake of eternal life.

This guy (& this is just me but I firmly, firmly believe this) Cal has helped me more than Jordan Peterson or even Dr K. Love this man’s details and honesty.

What if what I crave to be capable of involves playing or creating videogames? How do I separate “study of the craft” in the form of what you could call addiction, from genuine participation in the craft?

Does anyone have any other podcasts of great quality like Cal's? I have heard him mention Andrew Huberman several times, I checked it out, he has interesting information but I find him dry and hard to listen to for very long, he does not have the personality that Cal brings to his show.

It seems like all that got said in the first question was "build a foundation of efficacious-ness" without actually explaining how to accomplish that.

Kinda funny when he says "maybe you gotta throw in some SACRIFICE". My bro is leading a cult. 😂.. just kidding, love your content!!

I love your stuff, as a student it’s hard for me to be positive with the poor job market, and what I feel impending doom for jobs with ai on the rise. I’ve seen your episodes in chat gpt but would love to hear more, I just find myself losing motivation and discipline

Can you make a video on how to actually care? Tell me why you care about what you do, Why you care to get up every day, have a shower, exercise... cooking i understand as you have to eat. I cannot understand the drive to do anything else. You simply don't have to. So why are you doing it? I had a recent loss (death of my mum) so if I was lazy before, I am definitely lazier now. Perhaps it's partly the grief but the lack of desire was always there. Please tell me how you even want to do ANYTHING other than what you have to?

I love how you have your thought process and effectively building in public, your deep life philosophy.

As a Freemason, everything, you were saying lines with why what where and how Freemasonry builds people into having a deep meaningful and purposeful life that provides fulfilment.

As the chairman of membership and education for the United Grand Lodge of New South Wales & ACT, I would be open to having an off transparent conversation, sharing how Freemasonry does build the deep life for its Masons so can use the conversation for your research into how other institutions or philosophy have a system of building a deep life for the participants

Sad a Benedictine monk would make this objection. Try reading the Rule of Saint Benedict.

There's a genocide in Gaza made by Israel, and that one is asking about addiction of video games, , , you need a "deep" reading for what is going there, "deep" Cal!!
